New Oculus Touch controllers may have secret messages hidden inside them

New Oculus Touch controllers that are shipping out to customers soon may have secret messages accidentally hidden inside them.

The announcement was made by Oculus co-founder Nate Mitchell, who informed the public about the gaffe through Twitter.

The messages on final production hardware say “This Space For Rent” & “????The Masons Were Here.????” A few dev kits shipped with “????Big Brother is Watching????” and “Hi iFixit! We See You!????” but those were limited to non-consumer units. [2/3] pic.twitter.com/po1qyQ10Um

Some owners of upcoming Oculus Touch controllers will see either “This Space For Rent” or “The Masons Were Here.” Meanwhile a few development kits for the input devices will contain messages of “Big Brother is Watching” and “Hi iFixit! We See You!,” referring to the popular self-repair website which has a habit of tearing down devices to give them repairability scores.

The privacy-related messages hidden in “tens of thousands” of upcoming Oculus Touch controllers are certainly awkward, considering Oculus’ owner, Facebook, has been criticized for issues such as compromising privacy and harvesting data.

Mitchell, at least, owned up to it. While it is good to know that this does not affect the performance of the controllers, the Oculus co-founder still called the mistake “inappropriate” and promised that the company will not repeat it.

While I appreciate easter eggs, these were inappropriate and should have been removed. The integrity and functionality of the hardware were not compromised, and we've fixed our process so this won't happen again. [3/3]

The Oculus Touch controllers that will come with the hidden messages have not yet been shipped, as they will come with the Oculus Quest and the Oculus Rift S. Since they will not be recalled, they will eventually find their way to customers, according to Facebook representative Johanna Peace.

For those who are wondering where the secret messages will be located, Peace said that they will be printed on the “flex,” which is a flexible internal component of the Oculus Touch controllers.

The main form of input for the Oculus Quest is a modified pair of the Oculus Touch controllers, which are far more capable than the limited controller of fellow standalone virtual reality headset Oculus Go. The Oculus Quest will carry a $400 price tag, while the Oculus Go will be sold for $150.

The Oculus Rift S, meanwhile, is expected to replace the original Oculus Rift in the company’s lineup. In addition to support for the new Oculus Touch controllers, the Oculus Rift S will feature a slight increase in resolution per eye, inside-out tracking, and a price tag of $400 once it is finally launched.

New MacBook Pros are still coming, but they may have been delayed until fall

If you are priming your credit card to purchase a new MacBook Pro imminently, you might want to put it away. According to reliable reporter Mark Gurman, the next few weeks are going to be devoid of any notable Apple product revelations -- but new MacBook Pros are still on track for release this year.

Expectations were high after leaker Jon Prosser claimed the new MacBook Pro was a dead certainty for Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June. When that failed to happen, it left Prosser with egg on his face and Apple fans with a little longer to wait for their next MacBook Pro upgrade.

Intel’s 12th Gen Alder Lake desktops may have a new release date
Promotional image of an Intel Core processor.

Intel's 12th Gen Alder Lake-S platform could arrive on your desktop by the holidays. The chipmaker has told its partners that 10nm Alder Lake-S could launch in November, Wccftech reported, noting that the timeline could change. The platform featuring up to 16 cores and 24 threads was previewed earlier this year at the virtual CES conference, and it's unclear if the global semiconductor shortage will still have an impact on Alder Lake's expected November launch. Intel previously stated that chip supplies will remain constrained into 2022.

Alder Lake introduces big changes to Intel's processor architecture design. With Alder Lake, Intel is using a heterogenous core design, mixing big Sunny Cove cores with smaller Gracemont cores. Intel's change mirrors what Arm has been doing for smartphones and tablets for years, and the move is expected to boost performance while also driving power efficiency by combining high-efficiency cores with high-performance cores.
