Can you remaster a meme? LG tries with an R&B remake of ‘Damn Daniel’ shot on the V20

Damn, Daniel … you’re back at it again with the white Vans?

The viral sensation at the beginning of the year was “Damn, Daniel,” which featured a kid named Daniel being filmed by his friend, who hollering at him about his outfits, with particular attention to his shoes. It’s hard to say why these things take off exactly, but this one sure did, with 14 million YouTube views.

And guess who’s back.

To celebrate the camera in the new LG V20 smartphone — cameras, really; it has a 16-megapixel main lens and an 8-megapixel wide-angle lens — LG is refilming some of the most well-known viral videos of all time. With the ultra-high quality of LG’s lenses, the company argues, even the classics can become more beautiful.

The new video, which Digital Trends is exclusively premiering on Facebook a day ahead of its release on LG’s website, features the original stars of the video, Daniel and Josh, singing along with a serenade by an over-the-top ’90s R&B group.

To really prove the audio and video recording capabilities of the LG V20, the company says the films and vocals were recorded with the device. Additionally, the smartphone was used to record a series of short tutorial videos, with the R&B group highlighting the V20’s key features, like wide angle, steady recording, and hi-fi audio.

Look for other big viral hits in the next few weeks – I’m just hoping it isn’t Grumpy Cat.

The V20 itself looks to be among the year’s hottest smartphones (no battery pun intended) when it hits store shelves shortly. It’s the only phone to come with Android 7.0 Nougat, the newest version of Google’s Android operating system, and will feature a remarkably useful second screen that sits on top of the display and shows notifications and allows quick access to features.

If you need the specifics: The V20 runs a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor, has 4GB of RAM, and 64GB of internal storage, with a MicroSD slot if you need more. Its 5.7-inch IPS Quantum Display is brighter than a normal LCD screen, covered in Gorilla Glass 4, and has a 2,560 × 1,440 pixel resolution.

The V20 is also an A/V powerhouse, thanks to those dual cameras – just like the new iPhone, you’re probably thinking. Like all LG phones for the past couple years, this one’s camera is kick-ass; we took a few shots using both views, and they came out amazing (at first glance).

LG also bakes in new high-performance microphones, which should record high-resolution audio, even in loud areas (120-132dB). It can also save it in lossless formats, and thanks to four built-in DACs, it can now play them back much clearer as well.

I paid Meta to ‘verify’ me — here’s what actually happened
An Instagram profile on an iPhone.

In the fall of 2023 I decided to do a little experiment in the height of the “blue check” hysteria. Twitter had shifted from verifying accounts based (more or less) on merit or importance and instead would let users pay for a blue checkmark. That obviously went (and still goes) badly. Meanwhile, Meta opened its own verification service earlier in the year, called Meta Verified.

Mostly aimed at “creators,” Meta Verified costs $15 a month and helps you “establish your account authenticity and help[s] your community know it’s the real us with a verified badge." It also gives you “proactive account protection” to help fight impersonation by (in part) requiring you to use two-factor authentication. You’ll also get direct account support “from a real person,” and exclusive features like stickers and stars.
