Hugh Jackman’s final Wolverine movie is titled ‘Logan’ and is set in 2024

We’ve known for some time that the next solo movie starring Wolverine will be Hugh Jackman’s final appearance as the hard-to-kill mutant, but the film’s plot has largely been kept under wraps. Now, an insider has shared some new details about Jackman’s swan song — and while this information is unconfirmed, consider this a spoiler alert for the 2017 release.

On October 5, Jackman posted the first image of the movie’s poster to Twitter, confirming that it would be titled Logan. The use of the character’s assumed name seems to be an overt reference to the classic Old Man Logan comic book storyline written by Mark Millar.

Logan apparently gets underway in 2024, as per the second page of the script, which director James Mangold posted on Twitter. He’s drinking heavily, and his powers are fading: while his healing abilities are still in effect, his regeneration takes much longer than it did previously.

The youthful hand in the movie’s poster belongs to a young mutant girl, according to a report from The Wrap. This is important because as of 2024, mutant births are becoming more and more of a rarity, which is revealed to be the result of a shadowy operation called “Transigen” that turns mutant children into “killing machines.”

Not unlike Wolverine, Professor X is struggling with the ravages of old age. His powers are also diminished, and he sometimes has difficulty remembering Logan. The albino mutant Caliban, played in the movie by Stephen Merchant, acts as his caregiver.

Logan certainly seems to be quite different to the X-Men movies we’ve seen in the past. Wolverine’s last stand looks set to be pretty bleak — but after more than fifteen years playing the character, it will certainly be interesting to see Jackman break some new ground in the role on his way out.

Logan hits theaters on March 3, 2017.

Deadpool & Wolverine: How many post-credits scenes does it have?
A masked Ryan Reynolds watches as Hugh Jackman poses with his claws in a still from the movie "Deadpool & Wolverine."

Just about every story in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has a scene during or after the credits that sets up what happens next in the franchise. Since Deadpool & Wolverine is supposed to be the most impactful MCU film yet, audiences will surely sit through the credits to see what's in store for them. But some are probably wondering: "Should I stay or should I go?" Never fear! Here's a breakdown of what viewers can expect to see once the credits roll.
Well, does Deadpool & Wolverine have a post-credits scene or not?
Yes. Deadpool & Wolverine has only one post-credits scene.
OK, so what is it about?
The scene doesn't really hint at anything beyond the events of the film. In fact, the scene instead reveals the truth behind one of the most shocking moments in the movie: the death of Johnny Storm, aka the Human Torch.

Here's the deal: After Deadpool and Wolverine are sent to the Void by Mr. Paradox, they are captured by the evil Cassandra Nova's gang of superpowered variants. Coming to their rescue is a variant of the Human Torch (with Chris Evans reprising his role as the flaming hero featured in the two Fantastic Four films from the 2000s). While it seems like Wade and Logan are saved, Johnny is quickly defeated and imprisoned by Pyro after the mutant villain siphons the fire from his body.

Is X-Men Origins: Wolverine really that bad?
Hugh Jackman as Wolverine in X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

In 2009, 20th Century Fox attempted to expand the X-Men movies with X-Men Origins: Wolverine, the first film in a trilogy to feature Hugh Jackman as the title character. While the film eventually got its sequels, it's also regarded as one of the worst X-Men movies. This one may have been snake-bitten from the start. Shortly before it was released, the movie was leaked online. While X-Men Origins: Wolverine opened to $85 million domestically, its repeat business was strained at best and it limped to a $373.1 million worldwide total.

Since the origins of Deadpool & Wolverine are closely linked to this film, it's time to ask if X-Men Origins: Wolverine is really as bad as it appeared to be? There have certainly been worse superhero movies than this one -- The Flash, Morbius, and Madame Web all come to mind -- but is that enough to redeem X-Men Origins: Wolverine and salvage its reputation? First, let's look at the things that work in this movie.

Hugh Jackman flexes his claws as Wolverine.

Hugh Jackman has become synonymous with the character Wolverine, a role he's played since X-Men in 2000. However, there's an alternate universe where Jackman never dons Wolverine's signature claws and cigar.

In a Hollywood sliding doors moment, Dougray Scott was originally cast to play Wolverine in X-Men. In the lead-up to X-Men, Scott was completing his work as the villain on Mission: Impossible 2. When Mission: Impossible 2 went over schedule, Scott dropped out of X-Men, forcing 20th Century Fox to find a new Wolverine.
