Survival supports up to three players and features 50 waves of enemies across 10 different maps. In the official announcement, game designer Vinit Agarwal said that anyone who played the co-op arena mode in Uncharted 2 or Uncharted 3 will feel “right at home” with Survival, but the studio has “evolved the core gameplay with an entirely new level of depth, challenge, and variety.”
This variety includes a boss battle every 10 waves, many of which feature supernatural foes. Inspired by the mystical tales told in the game’s collectibles and lore, the bosses use “mystical attacks,” and include the new “Pirate Warlord” class.
Naughty Dog is not messing around with the boss designs. A quick glimpse in the Survival mode’s trailer shows a pirate completely engulfed in flame as he points his blunderbuss into the distance. Henry Avery, whose fortune-hunting tale and betrayal set the foundation for the narrative in Uncharted 4, will also be featured as a boss as well.
In addition to killing waves of enemies, the mode will also include objective-based challenges, including treasure collecting, defending an area, or taking out a particular target. Modifiers will also be randomly thrown into the chaos, with the potential to make enemies immune to certain attacks and a progression system will allow you to customize your character to reflect your playstyle more closely.
No matter which system you are playing on this holiday season, you will have a great option for wave-based action. In addition to Uncharted‘s Survival, Gears of War 4‘s Horde mode is an excellent cooperative inclusion in an already solid shooter and Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2 features an underrated cooperative mode as well.
