Along with showcasing quite a bit of Tom Holland’s teenage Peter Parker as he leads his double life as a superhero and student, the trailer also featured the grand — and explosive — introduction of the film’s primary villain, The Vulture — as played by Birdman and Batman actor Michael Keaton. It also included some scenes featuring Peter interacting with his superhero mentor, Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.), both in costume and while sharing some awkward moments as civilians.
Keaton’s role in the film was unofficially reported earlier this year, but it wasn’t until this trailer debuted that the casting was confirmed and audiences got their first, studio-approved look at the winged menace who is set to challenge Spider-Man in the character’s first solo feature after joining Marvel’s cinematic universe.
The trailer also featured a brief glimpse of pop star Zendaya as the character named Michelle, who’s seen calling Peter Parker and his friend Ned (Jacob Batalon) a pair of losers for ogling one of their classmates.
Directed by Jon Watts (Cop Car), Spider-Man: Homecoming also stars Marisa Tomei as Aunt May, Logan Marshall-Green as an unidentified villain, and Kenneth Choi as the principal of Peter’s school. Donald Glover, Martin Starr, Michael Barbieri, Laura Harrier, Tony Revolori, Angourie Rice, Tyne Daly, and Bokeem Woodbine also play supporting roles in the film.
Spider-Man: Homecoming is slated to hit theaters July 7, 2017.
