Watch Honest Trailers hit the ‘Mortal Kombat’ movies hard

There is no shortage of video game adaptations, but the good ones are sadly few and far between. Unfortunately for the Mortal Kombat films, they didn’t escape the notice of Screen Junkies’ Honest Trailers series, and they were both called out as being among the ones that “suck” in the latest video.

The Honest Trailers narrator brought the action flicks into the ring, only to pepper them with enough high punches and low kicks to leave both Mortal Kombat and Mortal Kombat: Annihilation bloodied. The mock trailer comes out swinging, opening with, “Before Assassin’s Creed tries to shake off the stink of all the video game movies that came before, two films will challenge the rule that game adaptations suck — and more or less confirm it.”

There is no letting up, either. The trailer calls out everything from the exposition contained in the script to the use of dragons — or, as the narrator calls them, “some animator’s bad CGI demon fetish.” The Mortal Kombat actors, including those who appeared only in the sequel, get extra attention; they’re described as “fighters who can’t act, actors who can’t fight, and people who can’t really do either.” In fact, the biggest compliment for protagonist Liu Kang (played by Robin Shou) is for his “luscious mullet.”

The games were all about the action, but Honest Trailer concludes that on this score as well, neither of the films measured up. Instead, they featured “generic martial arts battles” and an absurd amount of rules the characters have to fight and live by. Plus, the narrator points out unnecessary added elements that just don’t work, like the “underground hamster ball.”

Needless to say, this round — and the entire tournament — goes to Honest Trailers.

Mortal Kombat Onslaught promo image featuring multiple MK characters.

Mass layoffs have hit Mortal Kombat and Injustice developer NetherRealm Studios, according to reports by former workers on Thursday.

As spotted by TechRaptor, the layoffs seemed to mostly impact the mobile team. Among those affected was quality assurance (QA)analyst Tony Lazzara, who posted about the layoffs on LinkedIn, and also noted that the entire team had been shut down. He didn't specify how many people were laid off or if it the layoffs were limited to just mobile, but said "a ton of very talented people were put out of work." Another former NetherRealm QA analyst, Samantha Edward, posted that the move impacted "most of my colleagues" on the mobile side.

Mortal Kombat 1’s newest fighter returns to series for first time in 9 years
Takeda readying up his chains behind him as he stares into the camera. He's wearing a yellow and black mask and matching armor.

Mortal Kombat 1 is about to get another new fighter. NetherRealm and Warner Bros. Games announced Monday that Takeda Takahashi, who was last seen in Mortal Kombat X, will be playable starting July 23 for Kombat Pack owners, and everybody else on July 30.

The 2023 fighting game gave its characters reworked backstories, and that's the case here. Instead of being Kenshi's son like he was in Mortal Kombat X, Mortal Kombat 1 has made Takeda Kenshi's cousin. In his new backstory, he was sent to take down Kenshi for the yakuza, but was critically wounded. Recovering as Kenshi's prisoner, he took inspiration from the Shirai Ryu and now fights with the clan's moveset.

Longlegs trailer: Nicolas Cage goes crazy in a new horror movie
A woman stands against a wall with a scared look on her face in "Longlegs."

Who better to play a sinister and disturbing character than Nicolas Cage? The Oscar-winner sounds legitimately terrifying in the chilling trailer for Longlegs, Neon's upcoming horror movie from director Osgood Perkins.

Longlegs stars Maika Monroe as Lee Harker, an FBI agent assigned to work on a cold case involving a serial killer played by Cage. The cryptic trailer never shows Cage's face, but his sadistic voice can be heard as he stalks and frightens Monroe's Harker. While speaking about his character to The New York Times, Cage said, "I play […] a possessed Geppetto. He makes these dolls, and these dolls infiltrate families and get the families to do terrible things.”
