Saturday Night Live has been on the air for decades, but the late-night sketch comedy show is still changing with the times. For the first time in its 40-year history, SNL will air live across the country, Deadline reports. Audiences will say goodbye to tape delays in mid-April, and the final four episodes of the season will air live at 11:30 p.m. ET/10:30 p.m. CT/9:30 p.m. MT/8:30 p.m. PT.

While this doesn’t mark a time change for those living in eastern time zones, it does push the show earlier for the rest of the country. The benefit is that nationwide viewers will be able to watch together, like one big happy family. Aww.

“That way, everyone is in on the joke at the same time,” said Robert Greenblatt, NBC Entertainment chairman.

To make sure that viewers tune in for the episodes in question, SNL locked down some great hosts, ones that should each be a big draw. SNL alum and Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon will kick off the first of the four episodes on April 15, and he’ll be followed by Chris Pine on May 6, Melissa McCarthy on May 13, and then Dwayne Johnson on May 20.

Fallon teased his return in a tweet, saying that he “can’t wait to be back hosting.”

Can't wait to be back hosting @NBCSNL – LIVE across the country for the 1st time! April 15. Love that show. Love that cast. Here we go!

The hosts will add their contribution to what has been SNL‘s most-watched season in more than two decades. Viewers — well, perhaps with one very notable exception who lives in the White House — have been going wild over the show’s political coverage, which has featured Alec Baldwin as President Donald Trump, Melissa McCarthy as White House press secretary Sean Spicer, and more. The popularity has spurred on not just this broadcast change but also a limited run of Weekend Update episodes set to air in August.

SNL is on a high right now, and going live everywhere may help the show maintain its momentum.

The 10 Best Saturday Night Live hosts, ranked
Tom Hanks as David S. Pumpkins on Saturday Night Live.

Since 1975, Saturday Night Live has been an institution on NBC, and it's closing in fast on 1,000 episodes, which should be reached before the show celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2025. Hosting the show has become a rite of passage for up-and-coming stars and established actors and actresses. But only the best guest hosts have had the chance to return for multiple appearances. There's even a Five-Timers Club for SNL hosting veterans, although only five guest hosts have had the gig 10 times or more.

Since Peacock allows fans to revisit the previous seasons of SNL, we've decided to look back at the 10 best Saturday Night Live hosts, ranked from worst to first. It's an elite group of performers, including one who earned her place on the list on the strength of the most recent episode.

Saturday Night Live (SNL) skits are hit or miss. But when it comes to holiday skits, they usually strike gold. There are so many great holiday skits throughout the sketch comedy show’s 48-year and 49-season run and counting. Think: Rachel Dratch’s Debbie Downer putting the Grinch in the holiday spirit.

Digital Shorts like D**k in a Box starring Andy Samberg and Justin Timberlake, John Malkovich disappointing kids with his dark reading of a Christmas classic, the iconic Chanukah Song written and sung by Adam Sandler, Eddie Murphy celebrating Christmas in Mister Robinson’s Neighborhood are just a few of the stellar skits that have been made over the past decades.

Pete Davidson in a white tank and dark circles around his eyes playing the character Stu in the SNL Digital Short.

From Laser Cats to Lazy Sundays, Captain Jack Sparrow to Michael Bolton on a boat, Timothée Chalamet and his Tiny Horse, and Natalie Portman passionately rapping profanity and sexually charged lyrics, Saturday Night Live Digital Shorts have been a fan favorite for years. Andy Samberg arguably ushered in the trend with his comedy group The Lonely Island and their parody music videos and songs.

They became so popular that some of the songs topped the charts after the Shorts introduced them. The torch was passed to Pete Davidson, who became popular for starring in many Digital Shorts during his time as a cast member. In the current season, the writing team behind the latest Digital Shorts is known as Please Do Not Destroy, putting their fresh take on the trend.
