‘Aquaman’ director reveals a new photo of the queen of Atlantis

Warner Bros. Pictures’ Aquaman doesn’t arrive in theaters until December 2018, but shooting is currently underway on the feature — as evidenced by the latest photo from director James Wan.

This week, Wan posted a photo of actress Amber Heard in costume as Mera, the queen of the undersea kingdom of Atlantis. The photo, which he revealed on Twitter, features Heard in the green-scaled, one-piece suit that the character’s comics counterpart often wears.

“Lady MERA swept in from the sea,” wrote Wan in the photo’s caption. “First day with the exquisite Amber Heard.”

With Furious 7 and The Conjuring director Wan behind the camera, Aquaman will bring Jason Momoa back as DC Comics’ famous water-borne superhero after the character’s brief debut in Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice. Both Momoa and Heard are expected to also appear in the upcoming Justice League team-up movie.

Along with Momoa as the film’s titular hero and Heard as Mera, the cast of Aquaman also includes Academy Award winner Nicole Kidman (The Hours) as Aquaman’s mother, Temuera Morrison (Star Wars: Episode II — Attack of the Clones) as Aquaman’s father, Dolph Lundgren (The Expendables) as King Nereus, Patrick Wilson (The Conjuring) as Aquaman’s half-brother, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (The Get Down) as the villain Black Manta, and Willem Dafoe (Platoon) as Vulko.

The movie is currently filming in the Gold Coast region of Queensland, Australia, and is expected to continue filming in Newfoundland, Sicily, and Tunisia, in addition to studio locations.

Originally scheduled to premiere in October 2018, Aquaman was pushed back two months in one of many scheduling changes and shifts both behind the camera and in front of it for WB’s troubled superhero cinematic universe. Over the last year, the studio has had The Batman change directors and The Flash slide into limbo after losing two directors and undergoing multiple rewrites, among other issues.

Aquaman is currently scheduled to hit theaters December 21, 2018.

Andor creator says season 1’s success has given him complete creative freedom

When it premiered in late 2022, Andor's first season quickly emerged as one of the most critically acclaimed Star Wars titles of Lucasfilm's entire Disney-owned era. The show went on to earn eight Emmy nominations, including one for Outstanding Drama Series. According to Andor creator Tony Gilroy, the Rogue One prequel's extremely positive reception has helped him convince Disney and Lucasfilm to follow his vision for its second and final season.

Speaking with Empire, Gilroy told the outlet, "The critical appreciation of the show was really helpful, if not essential, in helping Disney choke down the price of what this is." Andor season 1 reportedly had a sizable budget of $250 million, and it seems likely, based on Gilroy's comments, that the show's second season will end up costing the same amount or more. Unlike some other blockbuster shows of the past few years, though, most Andor fans would argue that its first season's budget was used well and visible in every one of its episodes.

Kraven the Hunter’s early box office estimates aren’t looking good

It's been a long road for Kraven the Hunter. The forthcoming sixth film in Sony's Spider-Man Universe has been delayed three times over the past two years. It was originally set to hit theaters on January 13, 2023, before its release date was pushed first to October 6, 2023, and then to August 30, 2024. It was delayed again from that date and is now on the verge of hitting theaters this coming December. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like Kraven the Hunter will receive the enthusiastic welcome at the box office that Sony Pictures may have hoped it would.

According to Box Office Pro, Kraven the Hunter is currently expected to earn between $20 million and $25 million in its domestic opening weekend. If that estimate proves to be true, that will be a quiet opening for a film that reportedly cost north of $100 million to make. For further context, a $25 million opening would put Kraven the Hunter ahead of Madame Web, which grossed just $15.3 million at the domestic box office in its first weekend earlier this year, but below Morbius, which raked in a larger $39 million opening in its debut weekend back in April 2022.

Today marks 50 years since the theatrical debut of 1974's Murder on the Orient Express. This stylish murder mystery film from director Sidney Lumet (12 Angry Men, Dog Day Afternoon) is the first cinematic adaptation of author Agatha Christie's classic novel. This classic story shows detective Hercule Poirot, in one of his many iconic adventures, investigating the gruesome death of a shady businessman on board the titular train as it gets stuck in the snow.

Modern audiences may be most familiar with Christie's story from director Kenneth Branagh's 2017 film of the same name. However, 1974's Murder on the Orient Express remains one of cinema's most beloved and definitive Agatha Christie movies, winning an Oscar (for Ingrid Bergman's supporting performance) out of six Academy Award nominations, including Best Actor, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Original Score. Both adaptations have their merits, but there are multiple reasons why Lumet's film remains a classic of detective fiction.
