'Horizon Zero Dawn: The Frozen Wilds' expansion is out this November

Horizon Zero Dawn: The Frozen Wilds DLC - PS4 Trailer | E3 2017
Horizon Zero Dawn‘s excellent open world, intense combat, and intriguing story have already made it one of the best games of 2017, but if you’ve been itching to jump back into Aloy’s shoes, you’ll be able to do so very soon.

Horizon Zero Dawn: The Frozen Wilds is out this November, and it’s available to pre-order at a discounted price.

Available on November 7, Horizon Zero Dawn: The Frozen Wilds will cost $20, but PlayStation Plus subscribers can pre-order the game now for $15. Pre-orders of the expansion also come with a “Banuk Aloy” PlayStation Network avatar. The Frozen Wilds isn’t a “standalone” expansion like we’ve seen from Bethesda’s Wolfenstein and Dishonored series — without the original Horizon Zero Dawn game, you won’t be able to play it.

The Frozen Wilds adds a new area to the already enormous open world of Horizon Zero Dawn, and as the name would suggest, it’s covered in snow and ice. The region is deadly and rarely visited by foreigners, as we learned in the announcement trailer from E3.

“Few dare trespass here. Those that do seek the glory of the hunt,” a villager says in the trailer. “To challenge themselves in a land like no other. But they never find glory: only death.”

Aloy’s mission takes her to a mountain located in the Frozen Wilds, which is guarded by an enormous beast. The trailer shows a pile of snow begin to crackle with electricity as the creature lets out a mighty roar. Naturally, we don’t actually get to see what the beast looks like.

The main Horizon Zero Dawn game featured plenty of enormous robotic dinosaurs, including the powerful “Thunderjaw,” which Aloy regularly encountered as she approached the end of the story. Taking several minutes to defeat, the robots forced players to make full use of their combat skills.

The Frozen Wilds will be going up against some stiff competition when it launches in November. Call of Duty: WWII comes out just days earlier, and on November 7, Microsoft will be releasing Crackdown 3 alongside its upgraded Xbox One X console.

Horizon Zero Dawn: The Frozen Wilds will be available exclusively for PlayStation 4.

Until Dawn - Comparison Trailer | PS5 & PC Games

October 2024 is shaping up to me an absolutely packed month for horror games. On Wednesday, PlayStation announced that the Until Dawn remake is set to launch on October 4 for PlayStation 5 and PC.

The most announcement-filled week of gaming has wrapped up. From Summer Game Fest to the Xbox Games Showcase and Ubisoft Forward, there was a ton of big gaming news. Many of the games revealed are coming to PlayStation 5, too. On top of that, Sony's Days of Play initiative is still in full swing, which means some more PS2 games finally got PS4 and PS5 ports for the first time in several years. As a result, there's no shortage of relevant games in the PlayStation Plus Premium and Extra catalog to check out if you're looking for something to play this weekend.

Three titles stand out to me in particular. The first is the game that cemented the status of a pillar franchise for PlayStation and is getting reinterpreted as a Lego game for kids later this year. Next, there's a Dragon Ball game that looks even better than the manga and anime it's based on and is a nice companion piece to a Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero, which launches later this year. Finally, I'm recommending the PS2 classic that put Sucker Punch Productions on the map.

A tweet about available job openings at developer Guerrilla Games confirmed the existence of an online game set in the same universe as Horizon Zero Dawn and Horizon Forbidden West.
"We are continuing to create epic solo adventures for Aloy. But there is more," a tweet by LifeAtGuerrilla says. "A new internal team is developing a separate Online Project set in Horizon's universe. Featuring a new cast of characters and a unique stylized look, friends will be able to explore the majestic wilds of Horizon together."

Rumors about this Horizon Online Project first emerged in an MP1ST report in October 2022 that also claimed a remaster or remake of Horizon Zero Dawn for PS5 was in the works. Guerilla Games' tweet does not mention any potential Horizon Zero Dawn re-release.
Similar to Blizzard's survival game and Respawn's Star Wars games' reveals earlier this year, this announcement is almost solely related to job openings so details on the game itself are scarce. Guerrilla Games is still in the process of hiring animators, artists, game designers, and writers for the game, so it's likely a way out from release. It'll likely be part of PlayStation's upcoming live service push, which will also impact series like The Last of Us.
The Horizon Online Project does not have a release date, but we now know it is in active development at Guerrilla Games. In the interim, PlayStation Studios announced at The Game Awards 2022 that the Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores expansion will be released exclusively for PS5 on April 19, 2023. Guerrilla's message also suggests that we can expect a follow-up to Horizon Forbidden West starring Aloy eventually.
