Two video game universes collide in 'Final Fantasy XV: Assassin's Festival'

FINAL FANTASY XV: Assassin’s Festival
Ahead of the official release of Assassin’s Creed Origins, Ubisoft and Square Enix have announced a unique collaboration that brings the Assassins into the world of Final Fantasy XV. The free DLC, titled Assassin’s Festival, will be a limited time event with combining gameplay elements from both series.

Starting August 30, players can receive the “Master Assassin’s Robes” for Noctis after obtaining a Dream Egg. These eggs are a special item from the Moogle Chocobo Carnival going on until late September. The next day, the Assassin’s Festival DLC will be made available for free, transforming the town of Lestalium. Throughout the town, signs and banners signal the event’s arrival while new activities are waiting for players to partake in. Additional themed items and features, along with new abilities enable Noctis to move more like an Assassin.

While the announcement may seem random, the collaboration began almost three years ago at an informal meeting during the Tokyo Game Show. The meeting was originally meant to express admiration for each other’s work, yet it has grown into the two franchises paying homage to each other’s universes.

Leading up to the announcement, eagle-eyed fans may have noticed various Easter eggs within the Final Fantasy XV trailer from November, the Assassin’s Creed Origins announcement trailer, and more recently the Assassin’s Creed Origins Gamescom trailer. These signified the unofficial start to the connection between both franchises.

“This collaboration is the result of being huge fans,” says Assassin’s Creed Game Director Ashraf Ismail in a statement. “There’s a lot of respect between the two teams and we couldn’t be more thrilled with the opportunity to pay homage to each other’s work.”

The Assassin’s Festival is a timed event starting on August 31, and running until January 31, 2018. There has yet to be any mention of Final Fantasy content appearing in the upcoming Assassin’s Creed Origins.

Assassin’s Creed Origins is slated for release on PS4, Xbox One, and PC on October 27. For a full rundown of everything we know about the upcoming Ubisoft game, check out our detailed page. It includes trailers, pre-orders, gameplay details, and more.

The best video games of November 2023: Super Mario RPG, Assassin’s Creed Nexus, and more
Princess Peach in Super Mario RPG.

After a hectic October and the lackluster Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III becoming available on November 10, you might have felt like this outstanding year for games was finally wrapped up and that paying attention to new releases was less necessary. That feeling would be misguided, as plenty of outstanding games dropped this month. From new games tied to huge franchises like League of Legends and Mario to more experimental indie games and new IP, quite a few awesome games have flown under the radar this month.

In particular, the following seven games stuck out to us the most as the best video games released in November 2023. Give them a shot before the year ends; you might find one of them makes for a fine last-minute addition to your personal game of the year list.

More Black video game heroes shouldn’t be a fantasy
Final Fantasy 16's main cast standing together.

As a Black youth back in the early 2000s, I became an avid gamer after being introduced to Sonic the Hedgehog on the Sega Genesis. From there, I fell in love with nearly every game under the sun, discovering as many as I could. But it was my uncle who would really change my life forever when he showed me my first RPG in Final Fantasy 7 and bought me Kingdom Hearts. So imagine my excitement when I got to see Black characters like Barret on-screen in a heroic RPG. Sure, I’d seen Black characters in games before thanks to the beat 'em up and fighting game genres, but I was thrilled to see them in a genre where the closest thing to people of my complexion was the Black Mage. It opened my young mind to how invisible I was in so much of gaming.

Flash forward to today and you might understand why people like me were so disappointed when Final Fantasy XVI producer Naoki Yoshida argued that the RPG didn't include Black characters for the sake of maintaining "realism" in its European-inspired setting. It felt like a poorly argued step back, though it's not exactly an outlier in the broader industry. While video games have continued to evolve and open themselves up to new audiences through more diverse representation, many of today's biggest games from all around the world still tend to treat white male heroes as the "default" option.

Square Enix commits to release more games on Xbox, starting with Final Fantasy XIV
A screenshot of Final Fantasy XIV running on Xbox.

During Final Fantasy XIV's FanFest today, Square Enix not only confirmed that its popular MMO would finally come to Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S in spring 2024, but that it will commit to bringing more of its games to Xbox going forward.

Over the past decade, Square Enix tended to partner with PlayStation a lot more than Xbox. In 2023 alone, Final Fantasy XVI launched as a PS5 exclusive, while other Square Enix games, like Octopath Traveler 2 and Theatrhythm Final Bar Line, avoided launching on Xbox entirely. That all seems to be changing, though.
Following a reveal at the Final Fantasy XIV Fan Festival in Las Vegas today that the Dawntrail expansion is coming in summer 2024, Head of Xbox Phil Spencer and Square Enix CEO Takashi Kiryu came out on stage to discuss Square Enix's future with Xbox.
First, we learned that Final Fantasy XIV itself is finally coming to Xbox Series X/S with faster loading and 4K support. An open beta test will be held alongside the launch of Patch 6.5x, while a full release is planned for spring 2024.
This partnership is not just for one game, though. "Starting with today's announcement and whenever possible, we are planning to bring our games to Xbox for players to enjoy," Kiryu said while on stage, according to X account Nova Crystallis. This sentiment is reflected in an Xbox Wire post about the port, where Square Enix PR director Luke Karmali states that "this is just the beginning of our journey together."
Final Fantasy XIV is available now for PC, Mac, PS4, and PS5. It comes to Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S in spring 2024.
