‘Infamous: Second Son’ leads September’s free PlayStation Plus games

You are likely going to be spending the majority of your time in September leveling up your Guardian in Destiny 2, but if you are itching to take a break and play something else, you will have a few good options in September’s free PlayStation Plus games. A certain PlayStation-exclusive superhero series

leads the pack, as well as a PlayStation VR title.

Beginning next Tuesday, PlayStation 4 owners will be able to grab Infamous: Second Son. The superhero sequel originally released in 2014 and protagonist Delsin Rowe’s multiple power sets give you several different ways to explore Seattle. The stand-alone expansion Infamous: First Light was previously available as a PlayStation Plus freebie back in 2015.

PlayStation 4 players will also be able to pick up the aerial combat game Strike Vector Ex, which was redesigned with the PlayStation 4’s control scheme in mind. The PlayStation 4 version released last August and critics praised its old-school shooter roots and multiplayer gameplay.

But wait, there is more!

PlayStation VR

owners will also get a freebie in September in the form of Rigs: Mechanized Combat League. The multiplayer competitive sport-shooter was released as a launch title with the headset last year, and it makes tremendous use of the technology. A fun single-player option will also help you get up to speed with the game’s controls as well as its many robotic Rigs. With the game releasing for free, it should also see an influx of new players who can compete against each other.

PlayStation 3 players will receive Truck Racer, which originally launched in 2014 and is also available on PC. Also available on PlayStation 3 is Handball 2016 — it appears Sony might be running out of freebies to give away with the aging platform.

Lastly, the

PlayStation Vita

has not been forgotten. Indie hit Hatoful Boyfriend is coming to the handheld for free next month, as is We Are Doomed. The latter game is a twin-stick shooter also available on PlayStation 4, PC, and Xbox One. Both free games will also be free on PlayStation 4.

3 new PS Plus games to check out this weekend (October 25-27)

Halloween is next week, so you should get in the mood for it by playing some spooky games. Thankfully, several horror titles came to the PlayStation Plus Premium and Extra game catalog this month. From horror classics for the PS1 and PS2 to newer games with more modern storytelling and choose-your-own-adventure sensibilities, PS Plus subscribers will have a lot to choose from when they're looking for something to play this weekend. These are three newer highlights that fit that bill.
Dino Crisis

While Resident Evil is Capcom's flagship survival horror game series, it's not the only one they've ever had. There was also Dino Crisis, a horror game that swaps out the zombies for dinosaurs. While this series ended after three games and faded into obscurity, Capcom is finally acknowledging it again with a PS Plus re-release of the first game. I'm happy it did this, as the game is worth revisiting in 2024. If you can get used to its dated tank controls and menu design, you have a really solid and surprisingly cinematic retro horror game that deserves more love than it gets. If you've never tried Dino Crisis before, this Halloween gives you the perfect opportunity to do so. Dino Crisis is available on PS4 and PS5 as part of the PS Plus Premium Classics Catalog.

Dino Crisis is making a comeback next week thanks to PS Plus

It's finally here: 1999's Dino Crisis is coming to PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers for free on October 15.

This underrated Capcom classic helmed by Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami involves some sort of ... dinosaur crisis. It's a survival horror action game (with guns for shooting dinosaurs and puzzles) that'll feel familiar for retro Resident Evil fans. You will have to get the most expensive PS Plus tier to play it since it'll be in the Classics catalog, but it's a bit of a remaster, with up-rendering, custom video filters, rewind, and quick save.

After Freedom Wars, this PlayStation Vita classic deserves a remaster

If there’s one thing that the PlayStation Vita delivered, it was great Monster Hunter clones after Capcom’s hit series jumped ship from PSP to Nintendo 3DS. The list included games like Koei Tecmo’s Toukiden, Bandai Namco’s God Eater, and Gungho’s Ragnarok Odyssey Ace. While these mission-based games were perfect fit for the Vita’s pick-up-and-play lifestyle, they were also available on PS3.

Sony Japan even joined into the fray with the 2015 Vita exclusive Freedom Wars, which is celebrating its 10-year anniversary with a remaster on modern platforms next January, courtesy of Bandai Namco. On the heels of that surprise announcement, there’s one other hunting action game that needs to break free from the Vita’s shackles: Soul Sacrifice Delta. It's an enhanced version of 2013's Soul Sacrifice that added more content and gameplay adjustments.
Grimdark Archfiend hunter
Soul Sacrifice Delta was released in 2014 and designed by Keiji Inafune (yes, the auteur behind the infamous Mighty No. 9). It plays like how you’d expect from a Monster Hunter-like action game. You can hunt down your main target and hit its weak points to gather materials and create stronger weapons. It’s an engaging gameplay loop that makes sure you’re always prepared to fight increasingly stronger monsters.
