Look back on the best games of 2017 with this YouTube supercut

2017 in Gaming: The Year in Under 2 Minutes
2017 has been nothing short of a landmark year for video games. In addition to acclaimed entries in some of our favorite series of all time, we’ve also seen entirely new experiences that subverted our expectations and made us remember why we fell in love with the medium. YouTube user Malcolm Klock has created a two-minute supercut showing the best games of 2017.
Recommended Videos

Set to music from the underrated The Evil Within 2, Klock’s video begins with a look at some of the most breathtaking vistas we’ve seen in 2017, including areas of Assassin’s Creed Origins, Horizon Zero Dawn, and Rime, as well as beautiful water locations in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice. Each of these games offered a new spin on the broad “action-adventure” genre, with both Breath of the Wild and Assassin’s Creed Origins reinventing several key elements of their respective series.

Next, Klock highlights some of the most memorable characters from 2017, including Chloe Price from Life is Strange: Before the Storm, William Pierson from Call of Duty: WWII, William from Nioh, and Chloe and Nadine from Uncharted: The Lost Legacy. The Lost Legacy was eligible for inclusion as it was a standalone expansion, while downloadable content and remastered gamers weren’t shown in the video at all.

The supercut includes a few minor spoilers as it highlights painful and emotional moments in 2017 games, including fiery scenes in both Hellblade and The Evil Within 2, as well as an injury suffered by a particularly important character in Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus — if you’ve made it more than 30 minutes into these games, you don’t have to worry about the video ruining a surprise.

Klock also included some great action scenes in the video, such as a battle between Superman and Batman in Injustice 2, a showdown with a robot dinosaur in Horizon Zero Dawn, and the Baker family destroying their mansion in Resident Evil 7: Biohazard. Things then wind down for a brief moment of reflection, ending on a gorgeous shot of Princess Zelda overlooking a forest in Hyrule. We can only hope 2018 can have as many great video games as this year — and that loot boxes will be killed for good. You can check out Klock’s other year-in-gaming videos on his channel, going back all the way to 2011.

The best accessories in Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom
Zelda getting a ring with a frog on it in Echoes of Wisdom.

Equipment has always been a core component of Legend of Zelda series, and Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom is no exception. Unlike most past games, however, you won't be getting as many new unique items like bows and hookshots. Instead, you will use your Echoes to solve most problems, but there are a few other new ways to give Zelda an edge. Smoothies are great for temporary buffs, and the new clothing options can occasionally give you a small advantage, but it is the accessories that will make the biggest difference to your build.

These equipable items all have different benefits that range from somewhat useless or only needed in very specific instances, to the kind you will never want to remove. Even if you unlock all the extra slots, there's no way you can equip them all, so make sure you grab these accessories as soon as you can to save Hyrule with ease.
Best accessories in Echoes of Wisdom
There are about 28 accessories in Echoes of Wisdom, although a handful of them are upgraded versions of existing ones that completely replace the original version. In those cases, we will list the best version but tell you how to get the original and upgrade(s) so you can get the best version as fast as possible.

Balatro is one of 2024’s best games. Now, there’s an even better way to play it
A list of Jokers stacked together from Balatro.

I said I wasn’t going to download it.

Earlier this year, I became obsessed with Balatro. The hit poker roguelike got its hooks into me fast; I racked up 40 hours in the blink of an eye. I was sneaking another round in any chance I could, and it was pretty much the only thing I brought on flights for months. I knew that there would be a day where developer LocalThunk would bring it to mobile devices and I feared what that could do to me. But when the announcement finally came, I felt a surprising moment of restraint. I’d already sunk plenty of time into it and just didn’t feel the need to start it again on a new platform. I was free.

The best Zelda games, ranked from best to worst
Link with the Master Sword in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

The Legend of Zelda series is one of the most iconic video game franchises of all time. Ever since its debut on NES in 1986, Nintendo has consistently delivered awe-inspiring experiences that often define entire console generations. More than a handful of Link's adventures are among the greatest games ever created.

That makes ranking The Legend of Zelda series a challenging endeavor, as it was for all the Mario games. We did just that, though -- from the 8-bit era all the way to the high-definition open-world game Breath of the Wild (and its sequel Tears of the Kingdom). Our journey through the history of The Legend of Zelda starts now.
