Henry Cavill gets lead role in ‘The Witcher’ Netflix series

Warner Bros. Pictures

Henry Cavill is no stranger to heroic roles, having become a household name for his appearances as Superman in the recent DC films, but soon he’ll play an entirely new kind of hero. Cavill has been picked to star as Geralt of Rivia in Netflix’s The Witcher series, and we can’t wait to see him with gray hair and a beard.

Cavill made the announcement himself on his Instagram account, showing that he was signed into his Netflix account as “Geralt of Rivia.” He jokingly listed his new mailing address as being in Kaedwen, a city in the Polish book series.

During an interview with IGN last month, Cavill revealed that he was interested in playing the character, and that he had just replayed The Witcher III from start to finish — a game that can take dozens or even hundreds of hours to complete.

Cavill is certainly trying to avoid being typecast, with his burly and gruff role in Mission: Impossible — Fallout feeling remarkably different from his Superman character.

The Witcher series’ author, Andrzej Sapkowski, has been releasing his books to critical acclaim since the ’90s, but the world and characters received significantly more international attention after they were adapted into video games. Polish studio CD Projekt Red most recently released The Witcher III, which has been called one of the best role-playing games of all time.

A few months ago, The Witcher television series writer Lauren S. Hissrich said that though production was moving along smoothly on the project, it would likely not air until 2020. The series will be eight episodes long.

Hissrich also shared some of the other characters we can expect to see in the show. These include Geralt’s lover Yennefer, the young prodigy Ciri, and the horse Roach, among many others.

Video game fans may have to wait a bit longer before getting to see The Witcher on television, but they can watch the return of Castlevania when it the second season hits Netflix in October. The animated series focuses on Trevor Belmont in his battle against Dracula, and it has received good reviews for its dark tone and faithful adaptation of the source material.

With Argylle bombing, has Henry Cavill missed his chance to be a movie star?
Henry Cavill as Agent Argylle pointing at someone off-camera in the film Argylle.

As a huge Henry Cavill fan, you can believe me when I say that being a Henry Cavill fan is hard sometimes. There are his puzzling career choices that make zero sense, the questionable things he sometimes says, and his comical devotion to a miniature wargame that has now become his calling card. Sometimes, it feels as though he needs a big "Stop trying to make Warhammer happen" dose of reality. At the very least, he needs new management -- and he has that in common with his former Lois Lane, Amy Adams.

The thing is, Cavill has everything to be a leading man: devastating good looks, a cool demeanor, suave charm, and a devoted fan base. For a while, it seemed like he could become an A-lister, back in the mid-2010s when he was still Superman. Fast-forward to 2024, and Cavill is struggling at the box office — in a movie where he's not even the star, mind you — after two years of controversies, including a high-profile exit from his Netflix show and an even higher-profile exit from the franchise that made him famous.

3 underrated Henry Cavill movies you should watch after Argylle
Henry Cavill as Napoleon SOlo aiming a gun at someone off-camera in The Man From U.N.C.L.E.

This week, Henry Cavill -- bad haircut and all -- is back in theaters with Argylle, the new spy action comedy in which he plays the title character...who may or may not actually exist. This is Cavill's first major theatrical film role since his cameo in Black Adam, which ended up being his last appearance as Superman.

Outside of the DCEU movies, Cavill is probably best known for his part in Mission: Impossible – Fallout, a truly great action movie that can't be called underrated with a straight face. But when going over Cavill's previous films to find his best underrated movies, we couldn't help but notice that the vast majority of his early flicks are truly awful. Everyone has to start somewhere, but you're better off sticking with our picks for the three underrated Henry Cavill movies you should watch. The alternatives were suspect at best.

Argylle’s first trailer teases action, sex, and Henry Cavill with a bad haircut
Sam Rockwell and Bryce Dallas Howard in "Argylle."

Early next year, Apple TV+ and Universal Pictures are teaming up for a spy action comedy film called Argylle, which has some real-world intrigue behind the scenes. The Argylle movie is based on a book that hasn't been released yet by first-time author Elly Conway, a woman who may not exist. There's almost no digital footprint for the "real" Elly, and the main character in the movie is also named Elly Conway (Bryce Dallas Howard). We suspect that the real novel writer is just using Elly Conway as a pen name, but that mystery will have to wait for another time. For now, the fictional Elly is about to be thrust into a spy story that is straight out of her novels.
