Walkie-talkie voice messaging finally comes to Instagram

It started out as a pure photo-sharing app, but since then Instagram has — for better or worse — been adding a slew of features that have gradually taken it away from its roots.

In its latest grab from the world of messaging apps, Instagram now lets you send walkie-talkie-style voice messages. To enable the feature, make sure you have the latest version of Instagram loaded on your mobile device.

The company announced the feature in a tweet on Monday, December 10, saying: “Starting today, you can send voice messages in Direct. Talk the way you want to be heard, whether by whispering what you’re up to or shouting a compliment.” We’re assuming you can speak in a normal voice, too.

To send a voice message, tap on the app’s messaging icon and then press and hold the microphone button inside the text box at the bottom of the display, and say what you have to say.

Once you’re done, release the button and your audio message will immediately send. If you fluff your words or you misspeak, you can start over by dragging your finger to the trash can on the left side of the text box. Be careful though — once you take your finger off the display, there’s no way to stop your voice message from sending.

There is, however, another way to send an audio message. Simply tap on the messaging icon and hold your phone to your ear. When you hear a beep, start speaking, then once you’re done, tap on the send icon.

If you receive a voice message, you can listen to it through the speaker used for phone calls, or via the device’s main speaker by tapping on the play button.

Instagram is late to the party when it comes to the launch of voice messages, with messaging apps such as Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, Snapchat, and iMessage already offering the feature.

Instagram enhances messaging experience with new features
An iPhone 13 showcasing Instagram's new messaging features.

Meta has been on a roll this week, raining down a volley of new features on its messaging platforms. Earlier this week, WhatsApp got some much-needed improvements to the voice messages system. And a day before that, the Messenger app introduced support for Slack-like Shortcuts. Today, Instagram has unloaded a host of neat tricks for its direct messages, or DMs, section.

Borrowing a trick from Messenger, Instagram is adding support for a shortcut that lets you send silent messages. Just type @silent before a message, and it will be delivered without pushing a notification on the recipient’s phone. This feature is perfect for sharing weird late-night eureka moments without waking up the other person.

Microsoft Teams walkie-talkie comes to Android and iOS
Microsoft Teams walkie talkie.

Microsoft Teams has always had a walkie-talkie feature that allows users that are a part of the same underlying channels to connect smoothly through its web app. Now, this update can be accessed on both Android and iOS devices. The walkie-talkie feature is accessible with Wi-Fi as well as cellular network connectivity. The PTT (push-to-talk) feature landed nearly two years ago for frontline workers on the Teams app to ensure smoother communication during the early ravages of the pandemic. Only users within a particular channel can interact with each other, similar to two users from the same team who can have a private chat via Microsoft teams. Outside parties and users can only engage if they have been granted permission or have been added to these channels.

Microsoft has teamed up with Zebra Mobile to implement this functionality. Currently, this feature is not enabled in the app, and the average employee can't do it themselves. To add it, organizations need to go to the "App Setup Policy" from the admin center. Once switched on, the feature will be available on the app within 48 hours. This walkie-talkie feature will also be present on a wide range of Zebra Mobile devices geared toward enterprise use. The combination of this Teams feature and the PTT button on Zebra devices helps easier access and connectivity for essential workers. Additionally, the Reflexis Shifts Connector will have general availability in Teams from January 2022. This connector would integrate with the Reflexis Workforce Scheduler (RWS) and sync in real-time for assigning and managing worker shifts, which could be useful for hourly employees and contractors.

Instagram is shutting down its Threads messaging app
Instagram welcome screen on iPhone.

It looks like Instagram’s stand-alone messaging app, called Threads, will soon be shutting down as part of an ongoing consolidation of messaging apps by Meta (the company formerly known as Facebook that owns Instagram).

Threads arrived in 2019 as a stand-alone alternative to direct messaging in the Instagram app. Basically, Threads was to Instagram what Facebook Messenger is to Facebook.
