American Express is acquiring the restaurant reservation app Resy, the company said on Wednesday, planning to use the app’s expertise to improve the services offered to its loyal customers.

The purchase is expected to be completed by the end of the summer, and current CEO and co-founder Ben Leventhal will retain his position leading the company under American Express’s ownership. He clearly sees the purchase in a positive light and welcomes American Express as a partner.

“American Express is a brand that we have admired and sought to partner with from our inception. There are myriad points of synergy between Resy and American Express that we look forward to pursuing together in the name of creating an end-to-end global dining platform that thrills both diners and restaurants alike,” Leventhal said in a statement. “As it does today, Resy will continue to focus on delivering world-class hospitality software to our amazing restaurant partners, connecting diners to insider experiences, and reimagining the future of dining.”

If you’re not familiar with the service, Resy allows users of its iOS and Android app to book seats at approximately 4,000 restaurants across 154 U.S. cities. It has also expanded outside of the U.S., offering its reservation expertise to 10 countries in total, and seating more than 2.6 million diners every week. It seems much of the way Resy was run before will be retained after the purchase is complete, with existing services still being offered, and Resy and American Express continuing to be run as separate brands.

This purchase is only the latest in a recent spending spree on digital services by the financial corporation. American Express also recently acquired the personal travel assistant Mezi, the booking and airport lounge-finding platform LoungeBuddy, and two other restaurant reservation apps — the Japanese service Pocket Concierge, and the U.K.-based startup Cake Technologies. American Express will be looking at ways to use all of these services in conjunction to expand and enhance the services it offers to its customers, offering them more ways to profit from the American Express service.

Yet another iOS update is ready, and this one is important. The iOS 18.2 beta 2 update is live, and it's a big deal for a couple of reasons. It's available to more people than the previous beta, and it indicates another step toward iOS 18.2's public launch.

The first version of this beta was only available to people whose phones supported Apple Intelligence, but this latest version works with any phone that can update to iOS 18. Addditionally, iOS 18.2 beta 2 is only available to developer beta testers. There isn't a public beta at the moment, and we have no word on when one might release. Still, it's good to see that more people are included this time around.

Android 16 might give its own spin to iPhone’s Dynamic Island alerts

Over the past few weeks, we’ve come across some interesting details about the next major build of Android. Currently in development under the apparent codename of Baklava, Android 16 will reportedly bring a cool new feature called Priority modes for notifications.

If that sounds familiar, that’s because Apple already offers a bunch of focus modes toward the same goal and bolsters the system with AI-assisted priority notifications in iOS 18. It seems Google doesn’t want to be left behind, and in doing so, could very well lift from a popular iPhone trick.

If you aren’t already using the Apple Sports app, you need to
The Apple Sports app running on an iPhone 16.

Friends, we are well into the best time of the year: football season. The Lions are off to an incredible start, the Vikings look dangerously good, and I'm continually amazed by how bad the Browns are.

The 2024 season has been a lot of fun. Not only have the games been entertaining, but I've also had a much better time following the latest plays and scores on my phone. After begrudgingly using the ESPN app last year and the year before, I decided to go all-in on Apple Sports this year — and I couldn't be happier. If you have an iPhone and aren't already using Apple Sports, this is your reminder that you absolutely need to.
