Sekiro’s developers may release Elden Ring as early as June 2020

ELDEN RING - E3 ANNOUNCEMENT TRAILER | XBOX ONE, PS4, & PC

Acclaimed Japanese studio FromSoftware was just awarded the coveted Game of the Year prize for Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice at The Game Awards earlier in December, but the company appears to be wasting no time in creating its next project. Its game Elden Ring was announced at E3 2019, and we could be playing it far earlier than we anticipated.

A page on FromSoftware’s Japanese-language website advertises a New Year greeting card that players can register to receive with Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, Metal Wolf Chaos XD, or Elden Ring branding. It’s here that the page is interesting, as it says Elden Ring is planned for release next June. We also heard the game would release in June via a Target listing earlier this year.

We have only been shown a pre-rendered teaser trailer for the game thus far and have very little information on its contents, aside from its structure bearing some resemblance to the Souls series and the involvement of A Song of Ice and Fire creator George R. R. Martin.

Normally, releasing so many games in quick succession could be cause for concern, but FromSoftware and director Hidetaka Miyazaki have gotten quite good at it. Since 2011, the company has released the Souls and Souls-like games Dark Souls, Dark Souls 2, Dark Souls 3, Bloodborne, and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, as well as a selection of other games. We haven’t seen any drop in quality yet, and the studio has arguably gotten even more creative in recent years with Sekiro‘s innovative parrying system.

Should Elden Ring release so close to the launch of the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5, it’s also possible that it will be released as a cross-generation title. FromSoftware eventually brought both Dark Souls and Dark Souls 2 to the Xbox One and PS4, with the first game’s remastered version even coming to Nintendo Switch. Thus far, Elden Ring is only confirmed for Xbox One, PS4, and PC.

There will certainly be no shortage of Souls-like games releasing in 2020, either. Aside from Elden Ring, we will also get Nioh 2, which offers a magical and often terrifying version of feudal Japan. Lords of the Fallen 2 is also still in development, though it remains to be seen if it will actually release in 2020 or will be pushed back once again.

Elden Ring players are already struggling to beat Shadow of the Erdtree
The hand-to-hand combat style in Shadow of the Erdtree.

Difficulty is a well-known hallmark of FromSoftware games, and so the fact people are experiencing issues in the new Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree DLC, even against even common enemies, is unsurprising. However, even veteran players appear to be struggling. Many have taken to Steam to negatively review the game, which is now sitting at "Mixed" at the time of this writing.

Some of these complaints also cite performance issues, including stuttering and dropped frame rate. Publisher Bandai Namco and FromSoftware haven't commented on any upcoming fixes.

Elden Ring’s pre-Shadow of the Erdtree patch makes its final boss much easier
An Elden Ring player sits on their horse and looks out at a castle ahead.

Publisher Bandai Namco has released the patch notes for the big pre-Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree update, and while a lot of the changes were expected, it features some small but exciting additions.

The most noteworthy change in version 1.12, buried in the "New inventory features" section, is the new ability to summon your steed Torrent in the final boss battle. Without spoiling anything, not only does the final battle come right after another equally difficult boss, but you'll need to do a lot of sprinting to avoid its attacks. Being able to use your trusty steed will make this a lot easier. And, quite frankly, you'll need all the help you can get when it comes to most boss battles.

Elden Ring gameplay

Elden Ring was unanimously 2022’s Game of the Year. While many other fantastic games were released throughout the year, Elden Ring shut down all competition when it dropped in early March. It swept at awards shows and even landed a Game of the Year spot here on Digital Trends. It was the undisputed champ. Two years later, it’s now getting the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion. If a DLC ever had a chance at winning the top prize at The Game Awards, it could be this one.

Ahead of its June 21 release, I spent three hours with a hands-on preview of Shadow of the Erdtree. While it doesn’t offer anything drastically different from the base game, it’s still more of the same Elden Ring you love. It has an excellent atmosphere, fun exploration, and difficult bosses. More of the same isn’t a bad thing when that “same” is as beloved as this.
Return to the Lands Between
For those looking to pop in right on June 21, Bandai Namco clarified that players will need to have already beaten the bosses Starscourage Radahn and Mohg, Lord of Blood in order to access the expansion. Additionally, there are over 100 new weapons, some of which are not found in the base game.
