Fornite Birds of Prey event brings Harley Quinn to the battle

Fortnite is getting its next pop-culture crossover event. This time, the game celebrates the release of Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) with a pair of new Harley Quinn skins.

The new update will go live at 7 p.m. ET on February 6. Players can purchase a Harley Quinn bundle from the game’s item shop that features a new skin based on Margot Robbie’s rendition of Harley Quinn. The bundle also includes the Harley Hitter and Punchline pickaxes, which are modeled on the character’s signature baseball bat and cartoon mallet.

As a reward, select players can get the other Always Fantabulous Harley skin by completing three challenges. To unlock the skin, players will need to place in the top 30 in Solo, Duos, or Squads. Then, they must finish within the top 20 in any of those modes, and in the top 10 in a game after that to access the second skin.

Other challenges ask players to deal damage with pickaxes and hit weak points, which appear on items while harvesting. To hit weak points, players will have to look for the blue circle that appears while harvesting materials and successfully hit it.

The crossover was teased on Twitter over the past few weeks, with the Fortnite account replying, “See you soon Harley” to a video of the cast. The Fortnite team followed up the cryptic comment with a picture of Harley’s mallet posted to the game’s Twitter account on February 5.

This isn’t the first time Fortnite has introduced a movie-themed event. For the release of Avengers: Infinity War, developers created an entirely new game mode that allowed players to control Infinity War villain Thanos. And while the Birds of Prey update is Fortnite’s first DC event, Harley Quinn isn’t the first Gotham resident to join the game. Last September, a Batman skin was added to celebrate Batman Day.

Fortnite also launched a massive Star Wars event in honor of The Rise of Skywalker release, which was even more in-depth than the Birds of Prey crossover is expected to be.

The Harley Quinn Bundle will be available through February 17, and Birds of Prey, which is already garnering praise from critics, will be in theaters this Friday, February 7.

Epic returned Fortnite's main playlist back to the game. Players can once again explode into a two-story mansion after being sniped once from across the map in the world's most popular battle royale. However, those that flocked to the game for the new Zero Build mode don't have to be discouraged. The new style of play that disables building mechanics is now a separate playlist and is here to stay.

Fortnite’s Ariana Grande concert brings humanity to the Metaverse
Fortnite players dancing around Ariane Grande

I wanted to start this piece with a little optimism. I wanted to wax about how excited I was to go to my first in-person event since the lockdowns started last year -- to be in a crowd again, to be surrounded by colleagues eating delicious snacks and talking about video games together face-to-face. I bought my first train ticket in nearly two years and headed out to New York City to attend a concert … sort of. I was on my way to see the Fortnite Rift Tour, a digital Ariana Grande concert that takes place entirely within the battle royale game.

I don’t need to tell you that things are not back to “normal” yet. Despite what we may think or want to believe. I can’t and won’t say that things are better or if things are going to be worse, all I know is that life is still different. This was very clear to me when I walked into the venue that Epic Games booked for its Fortnite Rift Tour press event. The venue had tall ceilings, loud echoey walls, and wide-open spaces meant to be filled with art, music, food, and about 200 people. There was art and food there, and music too, of course. However, besides the crew that worked tirelessly to get this event off the ground, there were only six members of the press there, myself included.
