Amazon, Twitch partner to bring live artists to fans

Amazon Music and Twitch have announced a new partnership that envelops Twitch’s livestreaming functionality into the Amazon Music app.

The new arrangement will allow artists to connect live with Amazon Music’s more than 55 million customers across all streaming tiers, and give fans the opportunity to engage in a variety of ways, including livestreams and recorded music, according to the announcement.

This partnership is launching immediately, with several artists set to go live in the next several days on Amazon Music’s Twitch channel. The Killers’ Brandon Flowers and Ronnie Vannucci will join Amazon Music at 10 a.m. PT September 4 to answer questions about the band’s new album, Imploding the Mirage.

Several series are also in the works for this Amazon Music-Twitch marriage. Soul singer and storyteller Nicole Atkins will host a variety series the features performances and interviews with fellow artists, airing Wednesdays at 4 pm. PT. Also, Capital One City Parks Foundation’s SummerStage Anywhere will stream exclusive digital performances on Tuesday’s at 4 p.m. PT.

The partnership itself is an intriguing one, since it comes at a time when in-person events and concerts aren’t really a possibility. Executed well, this could help bridge the gap of interaction between artists and fans, albeit in a much different form than before.

“Twitch has always been about connecting amazingly talented creators live with fans everywhere,” said Tracy Chan, VP, Head of Music at Twitch. “Especially now, in a time when traditional venues are closed and tours have been canceled, musicians are looking for new ways to continue creating, connect with fans, and build community.”

Amazon Prime members now have access to 100 million songs
Amazon Music on a smartphone screen.

Amazon has expanded the number of songs that its Prime members can access inside Amazon Music from 2 million to 100 million -- which represents the entire catalog of songs that Amazon streams through its paid Amazon Music Unlimited streaming service. The expansion will also include access to "the most top podcasts, which will be available ad-free and at no additional cost to a Prime membership," according to the company.

There are still limitations on how Prime members can access the expanded catalog: you can only shuffle play artists, albums, or playlists. There is also on-demand access to a selection of All-Access playlists. For greater control over music playback and to access songs in spatial audio and in two varieties of lossless audio (HD and Ultra HD), you will still need to subscribe to the Amazon Music Unlimited tier. Both tiers support music downloads and are available within the Amazon Music app.

Amazon Music is now available as a native app on Vizio televisions. The inclusion of the app for SmartCast -- Vizio's built-in operating system -- means that you'll be able to stream more than 2 million songs for free on the third-largest music streaming service in the world without having to resort to Bluetooth or AirPlay or some other workaround. You'll also be able to stream Amazon Music Unlimited, which ramps things up to more than 75 million high-definition songs.

“With millions of users across the country, Vizio is an obvious choice for Amazon Music to expand our service into the homes of music fans,” Karolina Joynathsing, director of business development for Amazon Music, said in a press release. “We look forward to our customers being able to easily listen to their favorite music on Vizio smart TVs starting today.”

Amazon brings Matter support to several smart home devices
A collection of Matter-enabed Amazon devices.

At CES 2022, Amazon announced that it is adding Frustration-Free Setup to several smart home devices supporting Matter. Last year, Amazon announced that Matter support would be coming to most Echo devices and that the Echo 4th gen and eero devices would work as Matter Thread border routers. The Frustration-Free Setup is part of the matter specification.

Matter is a new smart home protocol that allows for advanced interoperability between different manufacturers. Think of Matter as a way for your Amazon Echo device to communicate with your Google Nest device, all the while talking to your Homepod Mini fast and efficiently. Once Matter starts becoming more widely available, there will be less pressure on your smart home to be ruled by one manufacturer and it will allow you to customize your smart devices for your unique needs. With companies such as Google, Apple, and Amazon behind the movement, you can be sure that this protocol will become a staple in smart home tech.
