The PlayStation 5 media remote has buttons for Disney+, Spotify, more

Sony has unveiled the PlayStation 5’s official media remote, which gives a glimpse of which streaming services will be available on the next-generation console. The remote has dedicated buttons for Disney+, Spotify, Netflix, and YouTube.

In addition to those four services, Sony revealed the full list of apps coming to the console on day one. The list includes Apple TV+ and Twitch. Sony says that more streaming services are coming to the console in the future, including Amazon Prime Video, Peacock, Hulu, and MyCanal.

The Twitch and YouTube apps are integrated into the system, allowing players to livestream to Twitch or share clips directly to YouTube. The Spotify app allows PS5 owners to play music from the app in the background while playing a game.

In the same announcement, Sony revealed the Apple TV app is coming to PlayStation 4, as well. There’s currently no set release date for the app.

The remote itself is fairly similar to when Sony first showed it off, other than filling in the previously blank app buttons. It features volume control, navigation arrows, and standard video playback buttons.

The remote launches on October 30, two weeks before the PlayStation 5’s November 12 release, and retails for $30. It is currently available for pre-order on Target’s website.

As revealed in last week’s user interface video, all PS5 streaming apps live in the console’s dedicated media space, which is separate from the game interface. All apps are immediately available in the control center and do not need to be downloaded individually.

The update also comes with a free demo so you can get a taste of what makes this game so relaxing to play. The MMO genre is overflowing with titles vying for the attention of anyone willing to invest significant portions of their time in a single game. There are no doubt plenty of killer choices you can make based on what type of combat, endgame, and payment model you prefer, ensuring that you'll almost certainly find one that fits you just right. I've been investing off and on in the genre for over two decades, with thousands of hours poured into everything from old, niche titles like Silkroad Online (which I just learned somehow still exists) to worldwide successes like World of Warcraft and Guild Wars.

In recent years, though, I find myself disappointed in various aspects of many popular MMOs, whether it's an overwhelming focus on endgame raiding, too much PVP-centric content, or unfriendly communities that make me cringe when I even glance at the chat. None of that is a problem when I return to Final Fantasy XIV. I somehow feel at peace each time I load up Square Enix's long-running MMO, and it's becoming harder and harder for me to want to venture elsewhere.
