Red Dead Online gets stand-alone release in December with $5 introductory price

Rockstar Games has announced that Red Dead Online will be available as a stand-alone game. Players can purchase the online game without buying Red Dead Redemption 2 starting on December 1.

Red Dead Online will be available as its own game via the PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, Steam, Epic Games Store, and the Rockstar Launcher. The game will normally cost $20, but Rockstar Games is offering it at a $5 introductory price until February 15. The game will include an option to unlock Red Dead Redemption 2’s single-player story mode for an additional cost, though no specific price is listed.

Red Dead Online gives players all current content in the game and access to future updates. The online version includes all specialist roles, missions, daily challenges, and more.

The game is getting a new update next week that will enhance the bounty hunter role. The content drop adds more criminals to track down, legendary bounties, and prestigious level equipment. To hype the update, all bounty hunter missions will reward players double XP this week.

Rockstar previously announced that Grand Theft Auto Online will become a stand-alone game in the second half of 2021. The release will be exclusive to PlayStation 5 for its first three months, where players can get it for free. Rockstar did not announce any plans to make Red Dead Online a timed exclusive for any platform.

GTA 4 and Red Dead Redemption remasters reportedly shelved to focus on GTA 6
Niko Bellic with arms outstretched in Grand Theft Auto IV.

Rockstar Games has reportedly halted plans to remaster Grand Theft Auto IV and Red Dead Redemption, following the lukewarm reception to Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition, which launched in 2021. Instead, Rockstar will shift its focus to the upcoming Grand Theft Auto VI -- a game that has been in the works for a while now.

This news first came from reputable GTA insider Tez, who said Grand Theft Auto IV and Red Dead Redemption remasters had been "on the table a few years ago," before Rockstar shelved plans to move forward. This was then independently corroborated by Kotaku, citing sources with knowledge of Rockstar’s plans. According to Kotaku, these two remasters aren't necessarily canceled for good, but Rockstar seems to have shifted most of its focus toward Grand Theft Auto VI for now since the demand for it is so high.

Two outlaws on horseback chase a cowboy across the desert in Red Dead Online.

It feels like every single headline I've seen recently in a story about Rockstar has included Grand Theft Auto Online somehow. With the massively popular multiplayer component of Grand Theft Auto V releasing as a stand-alone game recently, it's no surprise that Rockstar is going all-in on it. GTA Online has been around since 2013, when GTA V launched. And it didn't just retain a player base, but grew it larger and larger.

GTA+ is the be-all and end-all of that, the four-carat diamond ring planted on the online game's finger that says "you're my forever." It offers players (specifically those on Xbox Series X/S or PS5) a ton of free rewards, from $500,000 in GTA bucks in their in-game bank accounts to entire properties needed to take part in certain pieces of content.
