Lime’s retired e-bike batteries find second life in Bluetooth speakers

GOMI SPEAKER - powered by waste

Battery cells that can no longer power electric bikes can still be good for smaller products such as portable speakers.

British sustainable design startup Gomi is capitalizing on this transition and has partnered with urban mobility company Lime to transform its retired bike batteries into stylish 25-watt Bluetooth speakers that you can take anywhere.

The limited-edition product features 20 hours of battery life and can be fast-charged to full capacity in just two hours. It’s available on Kickstarter for 30 days only — throughout March 2021 — and costs 99 British pounds (about $137 U.S.), with shipping available to anywhere in the world.

The zero-waste efforts don’t stop with the battery, as the speaker’s marbled casing is created using 100-percent recycled plastic waste saved from landfills. The speaker’s four available colors include Lime Green (of course!), Black Mono, Blue Ocean, and Birthday Cake (mostly white with some gray and blue streaks).

Gomi describes the Lime battery packs that it uses as “damaged,” though when removing the cells, it carries out rigorous repairs and testing procedures before fitting them to the speakers.

“We designed the Gomi Speakers to be a breath of fresh air into the world of environmentally friendly consumer tech,” said Gomi co-founder Tom Meades. “We’re the first company to create fully circular tech products made from post-consumer waste materials that would usually end up in landfill, giving them a second life. We’re on a mission to prove that tech can be environmentally friendly, fully circular, while also being high performance and aesthetic.”

Commenting on the initiative, Andrew Savage, vice president of sustainability at Lime, said: “We’re really excited to see how Gomi has managed to give a new, second life to our old batteries. Their technical expertise and innovative product line offers an exciting opportunity to reuse parts that would otherwise have been recycled, and turn them into stylish everyday essentials that will last a lifetime.”

The speakers are the latest addition to Gomi’s growing range of sustainable products that also includes portable chargers and wireless mag chargers.

Marshall’s Emberton is the company’s smallest Bluetooth speaker yet
marshall emberton smallest bluetooth speaker bt featured

The personal audio arm of Marshall, a company best-known for its British-built guitar amps, has a new ultra-portable Bluetooth speaker: The $149 Emberton.

The tiny speaker looks like it's intended to be an electric guitar companion, thanks to the amp-inspired design cues that typifies the entire Marshall line. However, its ambitions are more modest. As an IPX7-rated device with a claimed 20-hour battery life, the Emberton is really just an ultra-stylish alternative to Bluetooth speakers like the JBL Flip 5
, Sony SRS-XB23
, and the Ultimate Ears Megaboom 3.

Bose SoundLink Revolve, Revolve+ Bluetooth speakers are up to $80 off at Walmart
A photo showing the Bose SoundLink Revolve

With the holiday season approaching and Black Friday in full swing, now is the time for dinner parties and dance-offs, and if you need sound that can easily travel both inside the home and out, a portable Bluetooth speaker works wonders. One of Walmart’s best Black Friday deals gets you a Bose SoundLink Revolve Bluetooth speaker for up to $80 off. You can buy the Bose SoundLink Revolve for $120, down from $200, while the $240 price tag on the SoundLink Revolve+ is $60 cheaper than usual.

In the SoundLink Revolve, Bose combines its decades-long audio expertise with smart, omnidirectional engineering. The cylindrical speaker outputs sound in a 360-degree space thanks to dual passive radiators that feed the sound into acoustic deflectors. As a result, you shouldn’t experience degradation in sound quality no matter where it’s positioned. The SoundLink Revolve uses an aluminum shell reinforced with rubber bumpers to protect it from impacts. With a watertight IPX4 rating, this speaker can join you for a trip to the pool without worry — just don’t let it fall in — and 12 hours of battery life will ensure it lasts through lengthier outings. An NFC chip inside facilitates pain-free pairing with up to two compatible smartphones by bringing them in contact with the SoundLink Revolve. The SoundLink Revolve+ is even better, adding more powerful sound, better battery life than many of the products on our list of the best Bluetooth speakers, and an integrated carrying handle.
Why should you buy this?
Though the SoundLink Revolve and SoundLink Revolve+ are over two years old, these are still some of the best Bluetooth speakers around. Bose rarely disappoints in the audio department, and the company’s products are built to last. Going up directly against mainstays like the Ultimate Megaboom 3 and value-packed offerings like the JBL Flip, the SoundLink Revolve is usually a tough sell, but it’s more than worth considering with today’s discounts.
