PS3 players reportedly unable to download key game patches ahead of store shutdowns

Following Sony’s announcement that it will be shutting down the PlayStation 3 storefront later this summer, fans are now reporting that they’re unable to download essential patches for certain PS3 games.

Sony recently confirmed that it will be shutting down its PS3, PS Vita, and PSP stores later this year, making it impossible to purchase new digital games across those storefronts. Sony explains that users will still be able to re-download any digital purchases made through the store, but they will be unable to buy new games following the closures.

Some of the PS3 games causing problems are disallowing players from earning trophies or playing online, and in some cases they require workarounds to be played properly. For example, the EU version of Dungeon Siege III seems to be giving players a data error if the DLC is installed.

The list of PS3 games that are unable to be updated is growing as players discover more. Currently, there are around 35 titles that are causing trouble. These include a variety of games, such as Battlefield 4, flOw, Gran Turismo 5, Journey, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2, Payday 2, Twisted Metal, and lots of others.

PSN users have shared tips on how to circumvent some of the patch issues, but there are no workarounds in some cases, leading to broken or buggy versions of games. That means anyone buying a PS3 game for the first time may not be able to play the most current version.

Interestingly, there doesn’t seem to be a consistent pattern across the list of broken games. They vary from region to region (for instance, only the EU version of Payday 2 is giving people problems), and in some cases they apply to only the digital edition of a game (such as Street Fighter III 3rd Strike Online Edition). In other instances, the disc version of certain PS3 titles — such as Tekken Tag Tournament 2 and SoulCalibur IV — is causing issues, while the digital counterpart is completely fine.

Sony has yet to comment on the issue, and it’s currently unclear if it’s a deliberate decision on its part.

Players still have time to get games across the aforementioned platforms. The PS3 and PSP stores are set to close on July 2, 2021, while the PS Vita store is due to shut down on August 27, 2021.

I've even found three somewhat themed around the holiday that you can try.

The first is an Assassin's Creed game set during the American Revolution, which is actually one of very few games to thoroughly explore that period of American history. If you're looking for something more cynical or satirical about America, then there's a remake from Black Forest Games and THQ Nordic that you should play. Finally, if you associate aliens and that classic Will Smith movie Independence Day with this holiday weekend just as much as you do fireworks, then there's a game from Housemarque you must play.

PlayStation 6 predictions: games we expect to see on PS6

We're four years into the PlayStation 5's lifecycle, which means that we've likely hit the halfway point. Console generations tend to last around eight years these days, so it's not impossible that we'll get a PlayStation 6 by 2028. While it might seem way too early to start anticipating a far off console (and it is), the reality is that the groundwork for it is likely being laid as we speak. Large scale exclusives can take well over four years to produce, which means that some PS6 games could be in the works right this second.

Some of those games seem like foregone conclusions. We'll likely see new games in the God of War and Horizon series, as well as new IP from studios like Housemarque. As for the rest? We already have some firm ideas about what games will land on Sony's next console. That's partially thanks to studio confirmation, leaks, and some good old fashioned common sense. Here our best guesses as to what we might be playing on a shiny new PlayStation by 2030.

3 outstanding PS Plus games to play this weekend (June 14-16)

The most announcement-filled week of gaming has wrapped up. From Summer Game Fest to the Xbox Games Showcase and Ubisoft Forward, there was a ton of big gaming news. Many of the games revealed are coming to PlayStation 5, too. On top of that, Sony's Days of Play initiative is still in full swing, which means some more PS2 games finally got PS4 and PS5 ports for the first time in several years. As a result, there's no shortage of relevant games in the PlayStation Plus Premium and Extra catalog to check out if you're looking for something to play this weekend.

Three titles stand out to me in particular. The first is the game that cemented the status of a pillar franchise for PlayStation and is getting reinterpreted as a Lego game for kids later this year. Next, there's a Dragon Ball game that looks even better than the manga and anime it's based on and is a nice companion piece to a Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero, which launches later this year. Finally, I'm recommending the PS2 classic that put Sucker Punch Productions on the map.
