Baldur’s Gate 3 patch revealed via a bizarre escape room livestream

Larian Studios announced that features like character backgrounds and disarming enemies are coming to Baldur’s Gate 3 via a new patch. The studio announced the update via a rather unorthodox livestream, revealing all the new content with a live roleplaying session featuring an escape room dungeon crawl.

One of the main features included in Patch 5 is Active Rolls. When players are asked to perform a skill check, they can now have their party augment their rolls using their spells. Players will no longer need to spam Guidance before every potential conversation. Backgrounds are also included in Patch 5, opening up small quests for players depending on what background they choose. Performing actions that are in line with these backgrounds will reward players with inspiration dice or more experience.

Larian Studios is also listening to the community carefully and has fixed nonlethal attacks, as well as split jumping and the disengage action in combat. These fixes have been two of the main concerns players had in the early access.

All of this news was brought to viewers through the Panel from Hell livestream that Larian Studios hosts to keep players updated on its progress with the game. However, the studio did something a little different and had a live-action roleplay, or LARP, session featuring people playing characters navigating through a puzzle-filled dungeon. The actions that players performed were voted on via chat by people watching the livestream. This certainly was an excellent change of pace, especially compared to the more serious conferences that filled E3 this year.

Baldur’s Gate 3 still does not have a release date yet. The developers stated that they want to take as much time as they need in order to create the game that they want. Patch 5 for Baldur’s Gate 3 will be available to download on July 13.

Staff picks: How Baldur’s Gate 3 beat the odds to become our 2023 Game of the Year
Baldur's Gate 3's Karlach appears on an image that says Game of the Year 2023.

When I first started playing Baldur’s Gate 3, I was immediately hooked by its engrossing (and gross) story, meaty CRPG systems, and the most personable cast of companions I’ve seen in the genre in quite some time. I knew I was about to sink months of my life into the 100-hour adventure. Things didn’t go according to plan.

The nature of my job meant that I had to move on to Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon at the height of my obsession. Though I wouldn’t have much time to put in long play sessions, I resolved to pick away at it throughout the year on Steam Deck. It was a critical error on my part, as I’d quickly learn that the enormous RPG is perhaps the worst commute game on the planet. It felt like I could barely accomplish anything in 30 minutes. Long, turn-based battles would often take up an entire train ride and sometimes I’d simply lose any progress I made to an untimely death. I grew frustrated, wondering why I was having so much trouble finding my way back to a game I loved.

Baldur’s Gate 3 Patch 5 adds new modes that can make the game easier or harder
Minthara in Baldur's Gate 3.

The fifth major patch for Baldur's Gate 3 just dropped. It's a literal game-changing patch, as it adds a new (extremely difficult) Honour Mode and a Custom Mode that will allow players to customize the difficulty of their adventure.

Honour Mode is essentially a hardcore version for Baldur's Gate 3. It disables save scumming, removes some exploits, increases the difficulty in combat and conversation, and implements a new Legendary Action system to the game's boss fights. Players technically only have one life to beat Honour Mode with, as they'll be presented with stats from their perilous journey and forced to disable the Honour Mode difficulty additions if they die at any point. Those who make it all the way through will get a Golden D20 in-game.

Baldur’s Gate 3 and Alan Wake 2 lead this year’s Game Awards nominations
Key art for The Game Awards 2023.

The nominees for The Game Awards 2023 are here following a livestream hosted by Geoff Keighley on Monday morning. It's been an excellent year for video games, and the nominations reflect that, at least in the AAA space. Baldur's Gate 3 and Alan Wake 2 garnered the most nominations, with eight each, but titles like Marvel's Spider-Man 2, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, and Super Mario Bros. Wonder also garnered several nominations.

In terms of indies, none got that much love in the show's biggest categories. However, games like Cocoon, Dredge, Viewfinder, and Terra Nil did pop up multiple times in the indie-friendly categories. We'll have a few weeks to think about all of these nominations ahead of The Game Awards 2023. This Keighley-hosted event is essentially the video game industry's version of the Oscars. It's one of the biggest stages where developers are awarded for their work and also doubles as a lengthy showcase featuring many game announcements and other gaming-related world premieres. This year is shaping up to be no different and might even go bigger as it's the 10th annual The Game Awards show.
