Acer Chromebook 315 — $179, was $349
Acer makes some of the best Chromebooks around and the Acer Chromebook 315 is super affordable. It has an Intel Pentium N6000 processor, 4GB of memory, and 128GB eMMC storage. It also has an attractive 15.6-inch HD widescreen display which is bigger than most other Chromebooks in this price range. It’s not speedy but it’s flexible with two USB-C ports, and a battery life of up to 10 hours so it’s good to go throughout the working day. If you just need something basic to type up documents or browse online, the Acer Chromebook 315 is a super cheap option.
Lenovo Ideapad 1i — $280, was $500
If you want something budget oriented but that still has some solid performance, then the Lenovo Ideapad 1i is a good option. It has an Intel Core i3-1215U processor, which is admittedly an entry-level CPU, but it’s still powerful enough to easily handle most productivity tasks and general day-to-day use. It has 8GB of RAM, which is a bit low, but very reasonable for this price point, and the same goes for the 256GB storage. The 15.6-inch FHD monitor is pretty great, and the 300 nits of brightness means you’ll be able to use it in most places without direct sunlight, which is a big plus.
HP 17.3-inch full HD laptop — $400, was $550
For a simple Windows-based experience, check out the HP 17.3-inch full HD laptop. It uses a 12th-generation Intel Core i3 processor while being paired up with 8GB of memory and 256GB of SSD storage. That’s simple stuff so you’ll still need to use cloud storage for some of your files but it’s fine for running Windows 11 Home in S mode. It also has a full HD IPS display with the 17.3-inch screen being a great size for anyone who needs more room to see what they’re doing. There’s also a HP True Vision HD webcam with a camera shutter, and a neat lift-hinge design for a more comfortable typing experience.
ASUS Vivobook 16 — $480, was $600
While this Asus Vivbook is a bit smaller, the 16-inch size is an excellent middle ground if the 17-inch laptops are a bit too big for you. Another positive is that, even though it’s well-priced, it has some solid specs under the hood, such as the AMD Ryzen 7 7730U processor which will easily handle most tasks. The 16GB of RAM is also pretty generous, as is the 1TB SSD, so you should have a generally smooth experience since you won’t have to run up against apps slowing down due to RAM issues.
Dell Inspiron 14 2-in-1 laptop — $500, was $730
Dell makes some of the best 2-in-1 laptops with the Dell Inspiron 14 2-in-1 laptop a reasonable option at this price. It has an AMD Ryzen 5 8640HS processor with 8GB of memory and 512GB of SSD storage. Yup, at last, a budget-friendly laptop with a decent amount of storage under the hood. Its screen is a delight with a 14-inch full HD+ panel with a resolution of 1920 x 1200 and 250 nits of brightness. Due to the design of the laptop, it has a 360-degree hinge so you can easily use it as a tablet, or in tent or stand mode, as well as in laptop form. It’s perfect for when you’re feeling indecisive.
Samsung Galaxy Book4 15 — $550, was $900
A great option for a budget-friendly, thin and light laptop is this Samsung Galaxy Book4, which still has some pretty solid specs, like the Intel Core 7 Series 1 150U, which should be great for most day-to-day tasks and work. The 15.6-inch FHD panel is also pretty solid, and the 300 nits of peak brightness means you can take it with you pretty much anywhere; you just need to avoid direct sunlight. On the bright side, you get yourself 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage, so you don’t have to manage your apps constantly.
Apple M2 MacBook Air 13 — $799, was $999
The Apple MacBook Air is the quintessential thin and light laptop, and if you’re already in the Apple ecosystem, then it’s the perfect laptop to grab. This configuration comes with Apple’s M2 chip, which is a couple of generations old at this point but still powerful enough that you can get pretty much anything you want done. The 13.6-inch Retina Display is gorgeous and runs a 2560 x 1664 resolution, while the nearly 20-hour battery life will probably be the most impressive thing of all. The only real downside is that it only comes with 8GB of RAM, which is a bit low for this price point, as is the 256GB, although that’s pretty standard for Apple’s design philosophy.
Lenovo ThinkBook 16 Gen 6 — $1,020, was $1,889
For a capable business-focused laptop, check out the Lenovo ThinkBook 16 Gen 6. It has a 13th-generation Intel Core Ultra 7 155U processor along with 16GB of memory and 512GB of SSD storage so it’s well-made for all your work-based plans. There’s also an attractive 16-inch WUXGA screen with 1920 x 1200 resolution while there’s 45% NTSC and 300 nits of brightness. A 1080P full HD IR webcam is above with a privacy shutter and dual microphones, while there’s a fingerprint reader on the backlit keyboard. It’s also been tested to military-grade levels of protection, so it can handle a few knocks and even extreme weather conditions.
Apple M3 MacBook Pro 14 — $1,499, was $1,999
While small in size, this MacBook Pro 14 has a lot of power underneath the hood, as it runs Apple’s latest M3 chip, which will easily handle more professional and difficult creative tasks. You’ll also be very happy to see that it comes with 18GB of RAM, given that Apple tends not to be too generous with RAM, although you do only get 512GB of storage, which is a shame at this price point. Even so, the rest of the laptop is great, especially the 14.2-inch Retina Display that runs a 3024 x 1964, 120Hz refresh rate, and a powerful 1,000 nits of peak brightness, so you can use it pretty much anywhere you go.
Dell XPS 16 — $2,650, was $3,260
As one of the best laptop brands, Dell is a great choice for something high-end. With the Dell XPS 16, you get an Intel Core Ultra 9 185H processor, 32GB of memory, and 1TB of SSD storage. It also has a dedicated graphics card with an Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070 powering things well. The screen is also a delight being a 16.3-inch OLED UHD+ display with 3840 x 2400 resolution, and 400 nits of brightness. It’s also a touchscreen if you want to be more tactile with how you work. That said, there are possibly going to be a few great deals in the coming days as retailers wind down, but you shouldn’t wait for that. Best Buy generally has some of the best laptop deals throughout the year, and that’s no different during Labor Day, where it’s deals are shining particularly bright. That said, Amazon isn’t too bad either, and isn’t trailing too far behind, with some solid deals you can snag from it as well. The only one that isn’t doing a well is Walmart, which traditional doesn’t do too well with things like laptops and desktops, so if you’re planning to snag a new laptop, it’s probably best to go with one of the first two options.
Should you shop Labor Day laptop deals or wait until Black Friday?
It’s tough to know when the right time to buy is. After all, it always feels like one sale is following the current one and so forth. We all pretty much know that Black Friday is the ultimate sales event, so you should always wait until then, right? That’s not as simple to answer as one might think.
Labor Day is a couple of months before Black Friday which means you only really want to hold out if you can. If you need a new laptop now, you need a new laptop. Waiting two months is far from ideal in most cases and often, by doing so, you’ll only see a slightly better price (if that) over Black Friday and Cyber Monday.
Instead, think about how urgently you need that laptop and don’t be afraid to buy now before you miss out. Also, it’s wise tot think about your finances. Black Friday is an expensive time of year with the holidays season meaning gifts to buy, extra food to stock up on, and travel plans to consider too.
