Alan Wake Remastered revives the cult classic this fall

Remedy’s cult classic Alan Wake is getting a remaster. The appropriately titled Alan Wake Remastered launches this fall and will bring the game to PlayStation for the first time ever.

Originally released in 2010, Alan Wake quickly became something of a cult classic. The action-adventure game is structured like a TV thriller, split into episodes complete with cliffhangers. It follows a novelist who begins living out scenes from one of his books while searching for his missing wife. The game has become even more significant in recent years thanks to Remedy’s hit Control, which features ties to Alan Wake.

Alan Wake Remastered only has a vague fall 2021 release window so far, but it’s coming to PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC via the Epic Games Store. The PlayStation part is significant, as the game originally launched exclusives on Xbox 360 and was ported to PC years later. Alan Wake was never brought to PlayStation consoles, making this a first for the game.

The package will include the full game and both of its DLCs: The Signal and The Writer. All of that content will get a 4K visual boost. The game will also feature commentary from creative director Sam Lake.

Remedy revealed the news in a surprising, but sweet fashion. Sam Lake published a blog post announcing the remaster on The Sudden Stop, a Remedy fan blog that began covering its games back in 2012.

Alan Wake Remastered will launch later this fall on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC via the Epic Games Store.

A character using a flamethrower on a Thing alien in The Thing remaster,

Nightdive Studios has made a name for itself for remasters and remakes of retro games, and it's announced its next project: a remaster of The Thing from 2002.

In an announcement during IGN Live on Friday, Nightdive revealed that the game will feature some modern features, including antialiasing, 4K resolution, and will be playable in up to 120 frames per second. While the content still appears to be the same (minus some new achievements), The Thing: Remastered will also have new dynamic lighting and improved models and textures.

With EA’s Star Wars shooter canceled, it’s time to revisit a classic
Star Wars Dark Forces Remaster key art.

Amid a layoff wave at the end of February, EA canceled a Star Wars first-person shooter that was in development at Apex Legends developer Respawn Entertainment. Considering this is a genre that Star Wars once dominated, as well as Respawn’s mastery with games like Titanfall 2, the news especially stung, even if it's small potatoes next to all the jobs lost in EA's layoffs. If you’re yearning for a Star Wars FPS and don’t want to wait for the Star Wars: Battlefront remaster launching later this month, you’re in luck.

On February 28, the Atari-owned Nightdive Studios released Star Wars: Dark Forces Remaster. Employing the proprietary KEX Engine used on remasters of classic Turok and Quake games, Nightdive enhanced the 1995 MS-DOS and Macintosh shooter that follows the escapades of Rebel mercenary Kyle Katarn. Playing this game for the first time in 2024, I’ve found that it still holds up immaculately and is worth checking out if you’re worried about the future of Star Wars games.

Alan Wake is coming to Dead by Daylight later this month
Alan Wake in Dead by Daylight.

Behaviour Interactive announced today that multiplayer horror game Dead by Daylight will cross over with Remedy Entertainment's Alan Wake later this month.

Alan Wake is just the latest of several crossover characters to come by Dead by Daylight. Just last year, the multiplayer horror game crossed over with franchises like Alien and Child's Play; Nicolas Cage also came to the game as a survivor. This Alan Wake crossover feels particularly timely, as Alan Wake 2 launched in October 2023 to critical acclaim, bringing Remedy Entertainment's cult classic horror franchise into the mainstream.
