Marvel’s Hawkeye trailer takes aim with Jeremy Renner, Hailee Steinfeld

The next television chapter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe will team Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye with Hailee Steinfeld’s Kate Bishop, another expert archer, when Hawkeye premieres in November. The live-action Disney+ series now has its first trailer, and it offers a distinctly holiday-themed sneak peek at the next adventure for one of Marvel’s Avengers.

Disney and Marvel Studios released the first trailer for Hawkeye on Monday, September 13, and it was accompanied by the show’s official premiere date on the streaming service: November 24.

Arriving just in time for the holiday season, Hawkeye finds Clint Barton (Renner) struggling to get home to his family for Christmas after criminal elements he made enemies of during “The Blip” — the five years between Thanos’ snap in Avengers: Infinity War that eliminated half of sentient life and the return of everyone who disappeared in Avengers: Endgame — track him down to exact revenge. Clint is joined by Kate Bishop, a 22-year-old archer who aspires to become a superhero like Hawkeye, and he must figure out a way to get home to his family with both his life and his festive spirit.

Renner and Steinfeld are joined in the series’ cast by Vera Farmiga, Fra Fee, Tony Dalton, Zahn McClarnon, and Brian d’Arcy James. The series will also introduce actress Alaqua Cox as Maya Lopez, a character with some history in the Marvel Comics universe, and feature the return of Black Widow actress Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, the secret agent trained by the same school as Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow.

Hawkeye is set after the events of Avengers: Endgame in the MCU, with Mad Men and Masters of Sex writer (and Bridgerton producer) Jonathan Igla serving as head writer and showrunner on the series. Saturday Night Live and Documentary Now! director Rhys Thomas will lead the show’s team of directors.

The premiere of Hawkeye will make it the fifth streaming series set in the MCU to debut on Disney+ following WandaVision, The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, Loki, and the What If?  anthology series. Marvel’s What If? is currently in the midst of its first season.

Hawkeye will premiere on November 24 on the Disney+ streaming service.

Marvel Studios' WandaVision spawned countless fan theories when it originally aired in early 2021. Many of the theories that sprouted around it turned out to be incorrect. The most well-known among these is the belief certain viewers had that WandaVision's final episodes would reveal a red-skinned comic book figure named Mephisto as the show's secret villain. However, one strong rumor that also grew in the weeks leading up to WandaVision's finale back in March 2021 was that Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) was going to make a surprise cameo appearance in the show.

That never ultimately came to pass, but it turns out that fans weren't entirely misguided in thinking it would. In a recent interview with Variety, WandaVision and Agatha All Along creator Jac Schaeffer revealed that Stephen Strange was at one point supposed to appear in WandaVision. When asked if she could divulge any scrapped post-credits scenes that she's written for Marvel over the years, Schaeffer responded, "Yes. I’ll tell you this one, because it’s been a long time, and so maybe the statute of limitations is up on it. Initially, Doctor Strange was going to appear in the tag for WandaVision."

Agatha All Along is one of the most widely liked titles that Marvel Studios has released in, well, a while. The WandaVision spinoff premiered in late September and did a lot to win over even some of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's more skeptical fans across its nine episodes. While Agatha All Along does set up some exciting future possibilities for several of its characters, though, its finale doesn't include a single post-credits scene.

According to Agatha All Along creator Jac Schaeffer, that isn't because she didn't have any ideas for one. When asked about the series' lack of a post-credits tag, Schaeffer told Variety, "That’s a Marvel decision. I know nothing more than that." The writer and showrunner went on to reveal that she actually wrote multiple potential post-credits scenes for Agatha All Along, none of which were ultimately used because of behind-the-scenes decision-making by Marvel.

What’s new on Disney+ in December 2024

Disney+ has dropped a lot of coal in the stockings of subscribers who were used to a full-service streamer prior to this year. Even now, much of the content in the Disney+ December lineup is shared with Hulu, including the first 20 seasons of Law & Order, the horror film Cuckoo, and the action series Paris Has Fallen. What's the point of having two streaming services — even in a Disney bundle — if they're already sharing content?

Thankfully, Disney+ is also bringing some Christmas gifts in December to serve as a reminder of why this streamer was once considered the best alternative to Netflix. Where else are you going to get a new Star Wars series (Skeleton Crew), the third season of Marvel Studios' animated show What If...?, a new Doctor Who Christmas special, and an Elton John special? Those are the kind of things that make Disney+ worth the money, rather than a warmed-over Hulu alternative. Disney+ should spend 2025 embracing the idea of actually giving people the special content that they signed up for in the first place.
