Ubisoft quietly reveals Rainbow Six Extraction’s release date

Ubisoft, the developer and publisher behind the Tom Clancy franchise of games, has quietly announced the release date of the series’ upcoming title, Rainbow Six Extraction, it seems. The game, which was initially schedule to launch on September 16, will release for Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, PS4, PC, and Stadia on January 20, 2022.

The game’s release date was announced through what seems to be an update to its E3 announcement post on Ubisoft’s website. The post, which was originally put up this past June, was updated somewhat recently to include the game’s new release date. Ubisoft has not made a formal announcement just yet, but we have reached out to the company for comment and will update this article when we receive a response.

Rainbow Six Extraction is a PvE tactical shooter that borrows a good number of mechanics from the franchise’s wildly popular competitive title, Rainbow Six Siege. Players can fill the shoes of different operators, each of whom has their own special abilities and gear. However, instead of fighting another team of operators, players are squared off against a strange alien threat that is slowly taking over chunks of land.

The game’s release date lands it square in the middle of what will be an extremely busy start for 2022 in the world of games. That same month will also see the launches of Monster Hunter RiseElden Ring (on January 21), and Pokemon Legends Arceus. The pace of games doesn’t slow until March, with February packed with releases including SifuDying Light 2, and Horizon Forbidden West.

Ubisoft’s impressive smart NPC demo reveals AI’s quiet gender bias problem
A conversation with Bloom in Ubisoft's AI tech demo.

At this week’s Game Developers Conference, Ubisoft offered a possible glimpse of an AI-filled future for gamers. The company demoed a prototype at the show that used Nvidia’s Ace microservice to produce fully voiced “smart NPCs” that players could interact with by speaking into a microphone. Despite drawing skepticism online (from myself included), the demo itself impressed us once we went hands-on with it. I had a surprisingly cogent conversation with an environmentally conscious NPC about the ethics of eco-terrorism, a completely off-script conversation made possible through AI.

It’s one of the stronger use cases we’ve seen of the tech yet, but it has a surprising shortcoming that even Ubisoft is struggling to solve: linguistic bias.
AI’s secret bias
In the short demo, I took on the role of a space-faring character who gets involved with a resistance group’s fight against a megacorporation. The three-part demo had me chatting with two different characters, both of which Ubisoft created long backstories for and fed into Nvidia’s Ace tool. I learned about the sci-fi world by chatting with an NPC, asking him about his comrades, before planning a perfect heist with creative thinking.

Skull and Bones: release date speculation, trailers, gameplay, and more
Two ships fire cannons at each other other a small island in Skull & Bones.

Ubisoft has a few notoriously troubled games in development that have left fans scratching their heads for years now. Aside from Beyond Good and Evil 2, the most curious game that has managed to avoid cancellation despite years of delays, restarts, and who knows what else behind-the-scenes drama is the pirate game Skull and Bones. It was first announced in 2017, and we've gotten almost nothing but bad news regarding this title in the years since. Despite having a playable build in 2018, for press only, the game has undergone major, if not complete overhauls.

Promised as a fully fleshed-out game built around the incredibly popular ship combat featured in Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag, Skull and Bones was poised to make a big splash following that game's success. Gamers loved all the pirate activities seen in that game, so expanding on that should have been an easy move. However, public statements about the game have almost completely vanished, leaving many gamers high and dry regarding the status of this pirate epic. We pulled out our compass, plotted our course, and dug up all the details on Skull and Bones that you need to know.
