BlackBerry Dakota and Apollo smartphones leaked

BGR has gotten its hands on leaked specs and an image of RIM’s upcoming smartphone, the BlackBerry Dakota. If the report is true, RIM may have a hit on its hands. Check out some of the details below:

5-megapixel camera with HD video capabilities, flash, and blur reduction
4GB of storage, 768 MB of RAM
3G mobile hotspot function and Wi-Fi capabilities
MicroUSB port
Bluetooth
10.5mm thin
Will include BlackBerry OS 6.1
2.8-inch screen; 640×480 resolution
Full Qwerty keyboard and touchscreen

As far as the hardware goes, it’s pretty reminiscent of BlackBerry Bold with the exception of a sleeker body and memory and storage upgrades. Perhaps the only surprising element is the lack of a front-facing camera. Nearly every “leaked” smartphone spec includes the ability to run a FaceTime-like function. Clearly, RIM has no interest in jumping on the video chat bandwagon with BlackBerry Dakota.

But that’s not all. Some information about another BlackBerry smartphone, Apollo, is also making the rounds. It’s the latest generation Curve device, and while not quite as capable as the Dakota, Curve is a popular line and it should do well. A look at the reported specs:

BlackBerry has yet to announce the smartphones or mention possible release dates, but with the Mobile World Congress just around the corner, official word on the devices could be coming soon.

TCL won’t make BlackBerry phones anymore, sending the brand back into limbo

TCL Communication has announced it will no longer be making BlackBerry smartphones, after taking over the dormant brand at the end of 2016, and bringing it back to life with a series of ever-improving devices. In a statement tweeted out by the official BlackBerry Mobile account, TCL Communication does not have the rights to design, manufacture, or sell BlackBerry phones any longer.

This means the BlackBerry Key 2 LE will be the last BlackBerry-branded phone produced by TCL Communication to be released, and it follows the BlackBerry Key 2, and the BlackBerry KeyOne. TCL Communication’s BlackBerry phones took the features fans of the brand loved — the physical keyboard, long battery life, and extra levels of security — and put them inside modern hardware with Google Android software. While not for everyone, they were successful with those either familiar with the brand, or those looking for something a little different.
What does this mean for BlackBerry?
The future of BlackBerry phones is once again unknown. While TCL Communication will not make another BlackBerry phone, it does not necessarily mean we will never see another BlackBerry phone. It’s possible the global license could be snapped up by another company eager to capitalize on the brand’s highly recognizable name. HMD Global, for example, has seen considerable success with the Nokia name since acquiring the license, while British phone maker Bullitt owns the license to make phones from brands including Cat, JCB, and Land Rover.

The iPhone 17 Air could be as slim as 5.5mm, according to a new report from Ming-Chi Kuo. Mark Gurman corroborates this theory in his Power On! newsletter, stating that the iPhone 17 Air is a step toward making the chassis as thin as possible. Even if the iPhone 17 Air is in no way related to the rumored foldable, though, it's still going to leave other devices in the dust. Right now, the iPhone 6 holds the record for Apple's thinnest model at 6.9mm, so the iPhone 17 Air will be a major reduction in size.

It’s a new year, but bad actors are still at it with an old trick repackaged for iPhone users. Bleeping Computer reports a rise in phishing attacks targeting iPhone users that involves tricking them into disabling built-in protections and clicking on malicious links.
