Nintendo 3DS coming Sunday; retailers offering trade-in discounts

Nintendo is on the verge of launching its new Nintendo 3DS hand-held gaming system, which will be one of the first consumer products to include 3D display technology that doesn’t require the use of awkward 3D glasses. The systems go on sale March 27, 2011—yes, we’re aware that’s Sunday—but Nintendo and its partners are hosting a number of Saturday launch events so consumers can get their hands on their 3DS systems starting at midnight. And a number of retailers are hoping to offset the standard retail price of $250 by offering discounts on trade-ins of older Nintendo DS handhelds.

Nintendo itself will be hosting its official launch event in New York City at Best Buy in Union Square; Nintendo 3DS “sampling” will happen from 12 noon through 8 PM, and at 9 PM NIntendo will kick off the formal launch party, with sales starting promptly at midnight. The event should run through 2 AM, and the company will be providing live entertainment, supplies of branded giveaways, hosting demos, and making sure plenty of food trucks are parked nearby.

Not to be outdone, GameStop will be hosting launch events of its own, opening more than 800 of its retail stores at 12:01 AM March 27 to give gamers a crack at the new system. For folks balking at the $250 price tag, GameStop will also be offering $50 to $100 credits toward the purchase of a new Nintendo 3DS system for folks who trade in a used Nintendo DS Lite, DSi, or DSI XL system.

Mega-retailer Walmart doesn’t want to be left out of the mix either: Walmart says it will have the Nintendo 3DS available in all its stores and online on launch day, but Walmart customers in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Missouri, Mississippi, Oklahoma, North Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and South Carolina get a special treat: they can trade in up to two used Nintendo DS systems for $100 credit apiece towards the purchase of a Nintendo 3DS. Walmart plans to run the trade-in promotion through April 30, or while supplies last.

Mother 3 is finally on Nintendo Switch … but only in Japan

Mother 3, the highly requested cult-classic RPG for the Game Boy Advance, is set to appear today on the Nintendo Switch Online service. But there's a catch: It's only available in Japan.

North Americans were first introduced to the Mother series under the name Earthbound on the SNES in 1995. As was common at the time, the game was renamed for the West in an attempt to avoid confusion. In 2006, a third entry was released in Japan for the GBA simply called Mother 3, but it has never had an official translation for Western audiences. Both Mother 2, aka Earthbound, and the original Mother, renamed Earthbound Beginnings, have been added to Nintendo Switch Online, but there has never been any indication that the third game would receive the same treatment.

5 Nintendo DS games we need on Switch after Another Code: Recollection

We’re in the middle of a Nintendo DS renaissance on Nintendo Switch, which is fitting as that classic handheld turns 20 in 2014. Coming off the excellent Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective re-release from last year, more DS classics are coming to Nintendo Switch this month. First, Another Code Recollection contains a full-on remake of the cult classic Another Code: Two Memories, and it's out now. In a few days, on January 25, Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney will remastered as part of a trilogy collection that also bears its namesake.

This has all gotten me to think about what other Nintendo DS games I’d like to see make a comeback. According to Moby Games, There were well over 2,000 DS titles, but not all of them matched the notoriety and success of titles like New Super Mario Bros. or Nintendogs. That means the DS library is still full of cult classics primed for a re-release or full-on series comeback. These are the five I’d like to see make a comeback in the wake of Another Code Recollection and Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney Trilogy.

I was burnt out on video games until I dusted off my Nintendo DS

It was mid-December, and I’d just finished my final assignment of 2023. A hectic year full of exciting games capped off with yet another monumental achievement for the medium, the Meta Quest exclusive Asgard’s Wrath 2. No longer locked into playing a never-ending stream of zeitgeist games that I had to keep up with for work, I was finally free to play whatever I wanted.

There was only one problem: The thought of playing a game made me sick. It turns out that playing well over 100 new releases in any given year is a straight path to burnout. Who would have thought?
