Exoplanet with eccentric orbit discovered in the habitable zone of a red dwarf

Astronomers have found a planet in the habitable zone of a red dwarf star, but its orbit is so elongated that it would have wildly variable temperatures and likely couldn’t support life.

The planet, named TOI-2257 b, was first spotted using data from NASA’s planet-hunting telescope TESS (Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite) and then observed in more detail using the Las Cumbres Observatory Global Telescope and the SAINT-EX telescope in Mexico. Using the SAINT-EX observations, the researchers were able to confirm that a planet was orbiting the red dwarf star every 35 days.

As red dwarf stars are smaller and cooler than our sun, the habitable zone around them, or the area in which liquid water could exist on the surface of an orbiting planet, is also different. Planets orbiting red dwarf stars could have liquid water even if they orbit much closer than the Earth orbits the sun. And having the planet close to the star also makes it easier to detect.

However, even though TOI-2257 b is in the habitable zone, don’t make any plans to move there just yet. The first issue with habitability is that the planet has a radius 2.2 times that of Earth, meaning it is large and likely gaseous with high atmospheric pressure. The second and most intriguing fact about this planet is that it has a highly eccentric orbit, meaning that its orbit traces an elliptical or oval shape rather than a circle. Sometimes the planet is close to its star, and other times it is further away.

In fact, it has the most eccentric orbit of a planet around a cool star discovered to date. And that has a big effect on surface temperatures there.

“We found that TOI-2257 b does not have a circular, concentric orbit,” lead researcher Nicole Schanche explained in a statement. “In terms of potential habitability, this is bad news. While the planet’s average temperature is comfortable, it varies from -80°C to about 100°C depending on where in its orbit the planet is, far from or close to the star.”

The researchers are curious as to why the planet’s orbit is so eccentric, which could be due to a giant planet in the same system affecting this planet’s orbit. To learn more, the researchers hope that the planet could be studied further using the James Webb Space Telescope.

Astronomers have discovered a rare type of planet called an "exo-Venus," which is between the size of Earth and Venus and is located just 40 light-years away -- practically in our back yard. Although scientists think that planets of this size could be very common in our galaxy, they are hard to identify because they are so much smaller than the big gas giants that are more commonly discovered. This new planet also seems to have similar temperatures to Earth, and studying it could help to explain how atmospheres develop and how Earth became habitable.

James Webb observes extremely hot exoplanet with 5,000 mph winds

Astronomers using the James Webb Space Telescope have modeled the weather on a distant exoplanet, revealing winds whipping around the planet at speeds of 5,000 miles per hour.

Researchers looked at exoplanet WASP-43 b, located 280 light-years away. It is a type of exoplanet called a hot Jupiter that is a similar size and mass to Jupiter, but orbits much closer to its star at just 1.3 million miles away, far closer than Mercury is to the sun. It is so close to its star that gravity holds it in place, with one side always facing the star and the other always facing out into space, so that one side (called the dayside) is burning hot and the other side (called the nightside) is much cooler. This temperature difference creates epic winds that whip around the planet's equator.

Glory are colourful concentric rings of light that occur only under peculiar conditions. Just from looking at our own solar system, we can see that planets come in a wide variety of colors -- from the dusty red of Mars to the bright blues of Uranus and Neptune. Planets like Jupiter have beautiful bands of color caused by variations in the atmosphere, while it's hard to even see the surface of Venus because its atmosphere is so thick. But there are other variations in color which planets can display, like a stunning rainbow-hued set of circular rings called a glory.

Glories are observed on Earth, and have been seen just once on another planet, Venus. But now, researchers believe they may have identified a glory on a planet outside our solar system for the first time. The extreme exoplanet WASP-76b could be host to the first known extrasolar glory, observed by the European Space Agency (ESA)'s Characterising ExOplanet Satellite (Cheops).
