Sennheiser teases new earbuds and a smaller Ambeo soundbar

During a virtual press event that was primarily intended to launch the company’s latest in-ear monitors (IEMs), Sennheiser executives also dropped two much-anticipated teasers: We’ll see the Momentum True Wireless 3 launch as its new flagship wireless earbuds, and there will also be a new and considerably smaller version of the Ambeo Dolby Atmos soundbar. No details on either product were provided, but Sennheiser indicated that the new Ambeo soundbar would be more accessible pricewise when compared to the $2,000 the company asks for its current beast of a bar.

IE 600

The bulk of the event was dedicated to discussing Sennheiser’s new entry into the audiophile market with the IE 600, a $700 set of IEMs that will be available this spring/summer. Made from 3D-printed amorphous zirconium, a metal with a glass-like atomic structure, they possess a very distinctive, beaten-metal look. But it’s not just about style. Sennheiser claims the exotic metal, which has been used by NASA on its Mars rovers, offers “triple the hardness and bend resistance of high-performance steel,” making it a very tough material. This provides both protection from damage, as well as precise housing for the IE 600’s internal components.

Those components consist of Sennheiser’s TrueResponse transducer, a single 7 mm driver, which the company says is responsible for the IE 600’s virtually distortion-free reproduction of music and extra-wide frequency range. Using these drivers, along with an acoustic back volume and dual resonator chambers housed in the IE 600’s nozzles, they have been tuned for a tonally neutral sound. This makes the IE 600 suitable for a wide range of music genres, as opposed to the company’s IE 900 flagship IEMs, which have been tuned with a greater emphasis on clear high frequencies, making them a better choice for classical music.

The IE 600 use gold-plated MMCX connectors, which are recessed in the housing for greater stability and guidance. You can use cables of 4.8 mm and smaller diameters, for a greater range of choices when plugging into audio sources. Inside the box, Sennheiser will include 3.5 mm and 4.4 mm para-aramid reinforced unbalanced and balanced cables. There will also be two different styles of earbud tips, Silicone and memory foam, both provided in three sizes. These should help most people get a comfy and secure fit, made easier thanks to the IEMs’ flexible, adjustable earhooks.

Sennheiser Ambeo Soundbar Plus hit by unforeseen technical delay
Sennheiser Ambeo Soundbar Plus.

Those of you who eagerly pre-ordered the new Sennheiser Ambeo Soundbar Plus for $1,500 will have to muster a little extra patience -- the smaller and more affordable version of the excellent Ambeo Soundbar Max soundbar has been hit by an unexpected delay. The 7.1.4-channel Dolby Atmos soundbar was originally supposed to begin shipping on September 22. But that date has come and gone and there's no word on when Ambeo Soundbar Plus orders will start making their way to customers.

Digital Trends learned of the delay when we reached out to Sennheiser's U.S. public relations agency to get a sense of when the company was planning to ship out review units. After all, we're as eager as you are to put the new Ambeo family member through its paces and see how it compares to similar Dolby Atmos-capable soundbars from Sony, Bose, and Sonos.

Sennheiser’s killer Ambeo soundbar now has a smaller, cheaper sibling
Sennheiser Ambeo Soundbar Plus.

Sennheiser's Ambeo soundbar has pretty much dominated any list of the best soundbars since it debuted, thanks to its incredible performance as a one-stop-shop for Dolby Atmos home theater sound as well as its impressive musical chops. But the Ambeo is really expensive ($2,500) and really, really big (you can't place it in front of a normal TV without obscuring a significant chunk of the bottom of the screen).

But starting September 1, those two challenges have been addressed: There's a smaller and more affordable Ambeo soundbar in town, the $1,500 Ambeo Soundbar Plus. And it's not alone. Sennheiser has also introduced a companion subwoofer, the $700 Ambeo Sub. Both products can be pre-ordered right now and will begin shipping on September 22.

Sennheiser’s latest earbuds do double duty as private TV headphones
Man wearing Sennheiser TV Clear earbuds.

Sennheiser has announced a new set of wireless earbuds known as the Sennheiser TV Clear. They're designed for folks who want to listen to their TV using headphones, but don't want to have to buy a separate set for when they're listening to music or taking calls on their phone. The TV Clear can do both, jumping back-and-forth with relative ease. They'll sell for $400 when they're released later this summer.

There are plenty of times when you might want to listen to your TV's audio privately, so that you don't disturb others, or perhaps so you can finally hear dialogue clearly without ramping up the volume to movie theater-like levels. But, as Digital Trends' own Andy Boxall recently discovered, there are not plenty of good options for doing so.
