HBO Max’s Hacks season 2 teaser is testing out new material

The first season of Hacks quickly became one of the most popular original comedy series on HBO Max last year. Audiences just couldn’t resist the two lead characters, Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) and Ava Daniels (Hannah Einbinder). On paper, the two women have little in common beyond comedic chops. However, Deborah badly needed new jokes to freshen up her Las Vegas comedy act while Ava was haunted by an insensitive tweet she wrote years before that nearly destroyed her Hollywood dreams. But as Deborah’s new comedy writer, Ava has a chance to prove herself again and put the controversy behind her.

The first teaser trailer for Hacks season 2 has arrived, and it shows us the ups and downs of Deborah and Ava’s relationship. There are times when Deborah acts like Ava’s best friend in the world, but as the trailer also shows, there are moments when Deborah’s wrath toward Ava is intense and frightening.

Why is Deborah so pissed off in that preview? Viewers of Hacks season 1 may recall that Deborah and Ava did settle their differences. However, Deborah doesn’t know that Ava slandered her in an e-mail before she was rehired to be her comedy writer. That’s the most likely reason Deborah is throwing things at Ava in the clip. Or it could just be another one of Deborah’s temper tantrums.

The Last of Us TV show will return for Season 2 at HBO
Ellie stares at Joel and Tess in the The Last of Us TV show.

HBO has confirmed that the critically acclaimed The Last of Us TV show will return for a second season.
This announcement comes from a tweet posted after only two of the series' episodes have aired. That said, the show garnered critical acclaim, broke some HBO viewership records, and doesn't yet appear to incorporate many plot elements from The Last of Us Part II, so it shouldn't come as too much of a surprise that the series is continuing. According to the tweet, the second season of the show will air on HBO Max (or whatever that service ends up becoming later this year).

No release window, story, or casting announcements were made in relation to The Last of Us Season 2, although that isn't very surprising as the show's first season is still airing. That said, it seems extremely likely that it would follow the plot of The Last of Us Part II, which sees Ellie go on a quest for revenge after an extremely traumatic event that we won't spoil here. While the second game in this series proved to be much more divisive than the first, there's certainly no shortage of dramatic moments and intriguing plot developments for Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin to adapt to television in another season. The Last of Us is currently airing on HBO and streaming on HBO Max every Sunday night. Digital Trends gave the series a four-star review, with Alex Welch writing that The Last of Us is a "lovingly made, often emotionally riveting adaptation of what is one of the most treasured titles in video game history."

Hacks season 2 review: Taking the show on the road
Jean Smart wears a cheetah print shirt while standing next to Hannah Einbinder in Hacks Season 2.

When Hacks premiered on HBO Max in May 2021, no one quite knew what to expect from the series.

Created by Lucia Aniello, Paul W. Downs, and Jen Statsky, the show charts the relationship that grows between a legendary female stand-up comedian (Jean Smart's Deborah Vance) and a young comedy writer (Hannah Einbinder's Ava Daniels) after they are forced to begin working together. While it could have been handled in a variety of disappointing ways, the series' central pairing proved to be the perfect recipe for comedy gold.

HBO Max is developing new Sherlock Holmes TV spinoffs
Jude Law and Robert Downey Jr in Sherlock Holmes.

It has been over 10 years since Robert Downey Jr. portrayed Sherlock Holmes on the big screen. And even if the long-delayed Sherlock Holmes 3 never comes to theaters, Downey is far from finished with the great detective. Via The Hollywood Reporter, Downey is set to executive produce a pair of Sherlock Holmes spinoff TV series for HBO Max.

Downey first portrayed Sherlock Holmes opposite Jude Law's Dr. John Watson in the 2009 feature film directed by Guy Ritchie. Downey and Law reprised their roles two years later in Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. Both movies were produced by Warner Bros. Pictures, and the proposed spinoffs will be connected to the films as part of a larger Sherlock Holmes universe. It's unclear if Downey plans to reprise his role for either series.
