The game of see-saw between Apple and jailbreak enthusiasts has swung back to favor the latter. Earlier this month, one-stop jailbreak source JailbreakMe relaunched, making use of a PDF-related exploit to crack open what had been the latest iOS firmware update at the time. The exploit was fixed in a new patch released last week, and that patch has now been jailbroken.

That’s iOS version 4.3.4, to be specific, for the iPhone (3GS or higher), iPod Touch and iPad. There’s a detailed breakdown covering how to install the newly released jailbreak at Redmond Pie, though it’s worth mentioning that you’ll probably want to skip this for now if you’re new to jailbreaking. The process is a bit complicated and the jailbreak is actually described as “semi-tethered” (a “tethered” jailbreak being one in which the device must be connected to a computer via USB anytime it reboots). There’s also no unlock for 4.3.4, so if that’s the sort of thing you’re into then this isn’t the jailbreak you’re looking for.

Both the redsn0w and PwnageTool (available at Redmond Pie) jailbreakers have been updated now, but there remains no untethered option just yet.

The iOS 18.2 beta, with new Apple Intelligence features, is here
iOS 18.2 update notification on an iPhone.

Apple has just rolled out the first beta of iOS 18.2, merely a day after seeding a release candidate version of the iOS 18.1 build. The latest beta brings some of the biggest Apple Intelligence features to the table.

The first one is ChatGPT integration. When users bring up Siri and ask it a question the assistant can’t handle, the request will be offloaded to OpenAI’s ChatGPT. “Users are asked before any questions are sent to ChatGPT, along with any documents or photos, and Siri then presents the answer directly,” Apple says.

I created the perfect iOS 18 Control Center
Someone holding an iPhone 16, showing the Control Center.

Apple's iOS 18 update is a big one. You can tint and change the colors of your app icons, freely place apps/widgets on your home screen, customize your lock screen controls, and more. There's a lot to dig into.

One of the other big features is the ability to fully customize the Control Center, and admittedly, I've largely ignored it since I downloaded the iOS 18 beta months ago. But last Friday after work, I took some time to dive headfirst into the Control Center on my iPhone 16 and completely rearrange it. After about 30 minutes of tinkering with things, I think I created the perfect Control Center setup.

If you have an iPhone, you need to download iOS 18 ahead of Hurricane Milton
Satellite messaging features on an iPhone with iOS 18.

Florida is preparing for Hurricane Milton's arrival on Wednesday. As the storm approaches, here's a valuable tip for iPhone users in its path.

Before the storm's arrival, it's crucial to download iOS 18 on your iPhone. With this version of iOS 18 installed, you immediately gain access to Apple's new Messages via satellite feature. The new feature lets you send and receive text messages without cellular and Wi-Fi coverage. This means you can stay connected with friends, family, and emergency services even in areas where power might be lost.
