AMD RDNA 2 refresh may compete with Nvidia RTX 3090 Ti

The first synthetic benchmarks of the upcoming AMD RDNA 2 graphics cards have just leaked, and some of the tests look very promising for AMD.

According to these benchmarks, the AMD Radeon RX 6950 XT may be able to compete against the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3090 Ti.

We’re days away from the rumored launch of the AMD Radeon RX 6000 “RDNA 2” refresh. The lineup includes three graphics cards: The Radeon RX 6950 XT, the RX 6750 XT, and the RX 6650 XT. Although the official, undisputed performance of these graphics cards still remains to be seen, synthetic benchmarks from 3DMark leaked out, giving us a good indication of what to expect from these new AMD products.

The new AMD GPUs have been tested on a platform including the AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D processor as well as DDR4-3600 RAM. The drivers in use were the latest Windows 10 version: 22.10-220411n. The tests include various 3DMark synthetic benchmarks, such as Fire Strike, Time Spy, Port Royal, and 3DMark 11. In some of these benchmarks, the new AMD family of cards truly shines.

All the scores come from Wccftech, and for context, the results have been compared to similar cards from Nvidia, such as the RTX 3090 Ti or the RTX 3070 Ti, as well as more budget models to rival the RX 6650 XT.

In the 3DMark Time Spy benchmark, the AMD Radeon RX 6950 XT managed to beat even Nvidia’s best, the RTX 3090 Ti. The AMD card scored 22,209 in Time Spy and 10,743 in Time Spy Extreme. A heavily overclocked RTX 3090 Ti scored 22,408, which is just marginally more than the RX 6950 XT, but without the overclock, AMD actually wins out. It’s also worth noting that the RX 6950 XT had a huge lead over its predecessor, the RX 6900 XT, which scored 18,463 — however, that test was conducted on a different platform, so there could be other factors at play here too.

In that same benchmark, the RX 6750 XT proved to be faster than the RTX 3070 Ti, while the budget RX 6650 XT beat Nvidia’s RTX 3060. The scores remain strong in 3DMark Fire Strike for all three cards, with the RX 6950 XT winning by a large margin over the other two.

3DMark Port Royal test is where Nvidia regains its lead due to the advanced ray-tracing cores, and the lead is quite huge here. AMD’s top RX 6950 XT falls slightly below the RTX 3080. Meanwhile, the RX 6750 XT has a comparable speed to the RTX 2080, but it falls far behind the RTX 3060 Ti. The last card in the lineup, the RX 6650 XT, beats the RTX 3050 by a hair in this test.

The confirmed specifications of the GPUs have been leaked yesterday as we’re nearing the launch. If the rumored pricing checks out, this spells great news for AMD as well as for those of us who want to buy one of the best GPUs. The reference model of the AMD Radeon RX 6950 XT is supposed to be priced at around $1,100, and if it can truly match the RTX 3090 Ti, it will be a much cheaper alternative — Nvidia’s top-of-the-line GPU has an MSRP of $1,999.

With the release of the Radeon RX 7800 XT and RX 7700 XT, AMD finally set foot in the mainstream gaming sector with its RDNA 3 lineup. Nvidia, its biggest rival, which also makes some of the best graphics cards, was the first to release competing cards with similar performance -- at least on paper. But are Nvidia's options better than AMD's in this generation?

The RX 7800 XT was, from the get-go, said to be the competitor to Nvidia's RTX 4070, but in reality, these GPUs differ both in price and performance. We've tested the RX 7800 XT and compared it to the RTX 4070, and we now know which of these two GPUs is the one to pick.

AMD’s two new GPUs significantly undercut Nvidia
AMD's Scott Herkalman presenting the RX 7800 XT graphics card.

AMD has just unveiled two new graphics cards aimed at gamers -- the Radeon RX 7800 XT and the RX 7700 XT. Set to rival some of the best graphics cards in this generation, the two GPUs are a way to bridge the gap in AMD's modest RDNA 3 lineup. AMD teases that both cards are suited for 1440p gaming, which could help them compete in the mainstream gaming market.

The prices are what stand out: the RX 7800 XT starts at $500, while the RX 7700 XT goes for $450. That significantly undercuts Nvidia's RTX 4070 at $600, though the RX 7700 XT is more expensive than the RTX 4060 Ti at $450.  Nvidia could really use some competition, so let's hope that AMD's new GPUs will be powerful enough to make a dent in Nvidia's market domination.
