Gears of War 3 planning campaign DLC

If you haven’t picked up Gears of War 3 yet, or if you have but haven’t had time to finish it, don’t worry–you won’t stumble across any spoilers here.

When it comes to any big release these days, you can almost count that there will be DLC on the way. And after all, why not? As long as developers don’t sacrifice the retail game in order to make more cash on future downloads, DLCs are usually a welcome addition to a game. But when it comes to games like Gears 3, games with a big emphasis on the multiplayer, usually those add-ons come in the form of more maps, or maybe even a new game type or two. And all that may still be coming, but in a recent interview with The Guardian, Gears director Cliff Bleszinski briefly spoke about what is upcoming for Gears 3.

“We have some DLC that’s coming up. We’ve confirmed we’ll be doing campaign DLC. One thing I can tell you is that you’re not going to see Marcus or Dom or Cole in it,” Bleszkinski said. “I believe that DLC should be unique and cool, like Lost and the Damned, Gay Tony, Mad Moxie’s Underdome Riot. All those kind of things. DLC’s the place where you play and have fun. So that’s one thing that’s an indication of where things may be going in the future.”

Without touching too much on the retail game’s campaign, Gears 3 marks the end of the trilogy—but not necessarily the end of the franchise. In fact, given the success of the series, it seems extremely likely that the franchise will return with either an extension to the current story, or a whole new story set in the same world.

When asked about where the rumors that this is the last ever Gears game came from, Bleszinski said “People on the internet. People tweeting me all the time saying ‘I can’t believe this is the last Gears game ever made!’ People just don’t listen!”

So while Gears of War 3 is just now hitting stores today (you can read our review here), you can expect more to come in the following months, and almost certainly more Gears in the future.

PlayStation released a sizzle reel trailer today highlighting many of the announced games players that can expect in 2024. While the release windows of many of them were already known -- some like The Last of Us Part II Remastered and Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown launch in just a couple of weeks -- two games did just have their release windows confirmed in this video. The games in question are Konami's remakes of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater and Silent Hill 2.

Snake stares into the distance in Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater's reveal trailer

There are almost no franchises that dominate an entire genre of game like the Metal Gear games do with stealth. Sure, other series like Splinter Cell and Syphon Filter came along to try and compete in the space, but even to this day, the first name that most people think of when they hear stealth is Snake and Metal Gear. Brainchild and defining franchise for the now-legendary creator Hideo Kojima, this series has gone from humble beginnings before stealth was even a real concept in games, to a nearly abandoned franchise after his departure. While the future of the series may be uncertain, the legacy is undeniable. Not every game in the franchise is as spectacular as the others, and age has certainly taken its toll on some, but that didn't make this ranking any easier. Perhaps the only thing more complicated than the story of these games is knowing which ones are the best, so we've crawled through all the vents, hid under every cardboard box, and held up every guard to rank all the Metal Gear games from best to worst.

How to permanently upgrade stats in God of War Ragnarok: Valhalla
Kratos standing by a stone monolith.

Despite all falling into the roguelike genre, every game within that category handles progression differently. Some have no permanent upgrades and instead force the player to simply rely on their skills and luck during each run, while others dole out buffs and tools that the player can accumulate over multiple runs to make each one a bit easier.

God of War Ragnarök: Valhalla falls into the latter category thanks to Master Seals. These special rewards allow Kratos to get permanent buffs to his base stats, easing the difficulty a bit for those who need it. Just getting the seals isn't enough, and not even Mimir will give you a clue on how to spend them, so we'll help you return Kratos to his godly status.
