If you haven’t picked up Gears of War 3 yet, or if you have but haven’t had time to finish it, don’t worry–you won’t stumble across any spoilers here.
When it comes to any big release these days, you can almost count that there will be DLC on the way. And after all, why not? As long as developers don’t sacrifice the retail game in order to make more cash on future downloads, DLCs are usually a welcome addition to a game. But when it comes to games like Gears 3, games with a big emphasis on the multiplayer, usually those add-ons come in the form of more maps, or maybe even a new game type or two. And all that may still be coming, but in a recent interview with The Guardian, Gears director Cliff Bleszinski briefly spoke about what is upcoming for Gears 3.
“We have some DLC that’s coming up. We’ve confirmed we’ll be doing campaign DLC. One thing I can tell you is that you’re not going to see Marcus or Dom or Cole in it,” Bleszkinski said. “I believe that DLC should be unique and cool, like Lost and the Damned, Gay Tony, Mad Moxie’s Underdome Riot. All those kind of things. DLC’s the place where you play and have fun. So that’s one thing that’s an indication of where things may be going in the future.”
Without touching too much on the retail game’s campaign, Gears 3 marks the end of the trilogy—but not necessarily the end of the franchise. In fact, given the success of the series, it seems extremely likely that the franchise will return with either an extension to the current story, or a whole new story set in the same world.
When asked about where the rumors that this is the last ever Gears game came from, Bleszinski said “People on the internet. People tweeting me all the time saying ‘I can’t believe this is the last Gears game ever made!’ People just don’t listen!”
So while Gears of War 3 is just now hitting stores today (you can read our review here), you can expect more to come in the following months, and almost certainly more Gears in the future.
