Pokémon Scarlet and Violet let you explore Paldea and crystallize your Pokémon

Today’s Pokémon Presents stream revealed more information about Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, including the name of the region and the gameplay gimmicks involved.

Welcome to the Paldea region! | Pokémon Scarlet & Pokémon Violet

Paldea is the name of the region in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, which is inspired by the landscapes of Spain and Portugal. The trailer also revealed that each game’s exclusive Legendary Pokemon will be your partner throughout the journey as players can ride them as they explore the open-world region.

Koraidon and Miraidon can change the form to suit the appropriate travel situation. They can respectively change into Sprinting Build/Drive Mode to help players traverse across wide areas of Paldea more easily, Swimming Build/Aquatic Mode to swim across rivers, lakes, and oceans, and Gliding Build/Glide Mode to fly from the mountains, cliffs, and skyscrapers to your desired destination.

Pokémon

As the player character is a student, they enroll in an academy that differs depending on the game. In Pokémon Scarlet, you will be attending Naranja Academy, while you’ll be attending Uva Academy if you choose to play Pokémon Violet. The school system is reminiscent of trials in Pokémon Sun and Moon, only it’s more involved because you’ll be participating in an independent study of finding treasure throughout Paldea.

Speaking of treasure, your Pokémon will undergo a new transformation during battles called the Terastal Phenomenon, which makes them look like Swarovski-style crystals. When your Pokémon Terastallizes, they wear a Tera Jewel on their head like a crown and get boosted powers on moves that match their Tera Type. A Pokémon’s Tera Type isn’t necessarily the same as their regular type, and these transformations last until the end of the battle.

Pokémon

The game has introduced some new Pokémon to fill up your Pokédex: Fidough, Cetitan, and Paldean Wooper. Fidough is a puppy Pokémon whose ears and body resemble donuts, and it ferments everything with yeast in its breath. Cetitan is a Tera Whale that uses its muscles to support its immense body and uses said body to dole out powerful physical attacks. Paldean Wooper is a regional Wooper that covered itself with muddy, poisonous film in order to survive on land, and its gills have hardened as a result.

The best part about Pokémon Scarlet and Violet being an open-world game is that there are three main stories that you can play in any order. One of them involves visiting every Pokémon Gym in your quest to become a Pokémon Champion, but there is no set order of gyms to visit like in previous Pokémon games. The other two story modes will be revealed at a later time.

Pokémon

Pokémon Scarlet and Violet have brought back raid battles in the form of Tera Raid Battles. Here, you can recruit up to three friends and fight Pokémon in Terastallized forms. You don’t have to wait for other people to choose their actions while attacking the Pokémon.

With the Poké Portal, you can do a Link Trade with a specific person or do a Surprise Trade with a random trainer from somewhere in the world. The Poké Portal has a new feature called the Union Circle, where you can summon up to three friends to play together in the same space, enabling co-op gameplay.

Pokémon Scarlet and Violet will be released on the Nintendo Switch on November 18.

All new and returning Pokémon in Scarlet and Violet: The Indigo Disk
A Pokémon trainer holding a glowing Pokémon ball.

It's finally time, trainers. The last DLC for Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, The Indigo Disk, will put a firm cap on the latest Pokédex. The DLC not only adds a handful of new critters to the list but also brings back a huge swath of returning favorites from past generations that make exploring Paldea a fresh experience all over again. Your new adventure will have you attempting to solve the mystery of an ancient myth in Kitakami, and perhaps these new Pokémon hold some answers.

Here are all the new Pokémon you can look forward to battling and catching, as well as the list of returning ones to see if your childhood favorite made the cut.
All new Pokémon
Just like in the Teal Mask DLC, this final expansion only adds four new Pokémon. Here's a breakdown of each:
Terapagos
This is the poster child for this DLC, and is going to play a major part of the game's story. Because of its importance, we don't know almost any details about it, including what type it is, except that it does have a Terastal Form.

After a rocky year, Pokémon Scarlet and Violet’s story is coming to an end next month. Its second DLC, The Indigo Disk, will conclude its bonus Hidden Treasure of Area Zero arc on December 14. That’ll close out the series’ most scrutinized set of games to date, which were lambasted at launch for performance issues and poor visual quality. The Indigo Disk certainly won’t reverse that narrative, but it at least has a shot at sending disappointed fans home happy -- especially after the underwhelming Teal Mask expansion.

Ahead of its launch, I got a hands-on preview with the upcoming DLC that showed me a bit of what to expect. I explored its new open-world area, saw some familiar monsters, and fought in one of the toughest battles I’ve ever had in a mainline Pokémon story. Every technical problem in the base game still reared its ugly head during my hour of playtime, but The Indigo Disk at least brings some high-level challenges to the mix that will test even the most seasoned competitive players.
Same problems, new challenges
The Indigo Disk picks up right after The Teal Mask’s conclusion (players will need to beat it to start the new DLC). In it, I’m sent to Blueberry Academy, which is a massive biodome floating in the middle of the ocean. It houses a round, open-world area split up into four distinct environments. One corner has your standard grassy plains, while another is a massive snowy mountain full of ice Pokémon. It’s significantly bigger than Teal Mask’s bite-sized open world, though the general design isn’t too different.

Even though it isn't a new generation, The Teal Mask DLC for Pokémon Scarlet and Violet is still introducing a handful of new Pokémon to add to your Pokédex. Whether or not you've already been filling out and completing your collection in the base game, everyone is curious to see what new types, designs, and abilities a new set of Pokémon brings to the table. Here are all the brand new Pokémon you can find while exploring the Land of Kitakami and their types.
Every new Pokémon in The Teal Mask

Ogerpon (4 types)
Ogerpon is the newest Legendary to be added to the series, and is by default a Grass type. However, in keeping with the theme of masks, it will change its form and type depending on what mask it is wearing, such as the Wellspring mask, Hearthflame mask, and Cornerstone mask. By default, Ogerpon is wearing the titular Teal mask.
Okidogi
This is a dog-themed Poison and Fighting-type Legendary that is a Hero of Kitakami. This Pokémon has no evolutions.
Munkidori
This curious monkey is a Poison and Psychic-type Legendary that also holds the title of Hero of Kitakami. Munkidori has no evolutions.
Fezandipiti
The final Hero of Kitakami is Fezandipiti, the Poison and Fairy-type Legendary. As usual, this Legendary can't evolve.
Dipplin
A rare Grass and Dragon type, Dipplin is an evolution of Applin.
Poltchageist
You could probably guess Poltchageist was a Grass and Ghost type by its name and design. This Pokémon can evolve into Sinistcha using either an Unremarkable Teacup or Masterpiece Teacup.
Sinistcha
The evolution of Poltageist we just talked about, Sinistcha remains a Grass and Ghost type.
