Tactics Ogre: Reborn joins a crowded release schedule in November

Square Enix officially announced Tactics Ogre: Reborn. It will launch on PC, PlayStation 4, PS5, and Nintendo Switch on November 11.

Tactics Ogre: Reborn is a turn-based strategy game that takes place in The Valerian Isles. The king, Dorgalua Oberyth, brought peace for 50 years, but after his death, a civil war breaks out between three factions. The story follows Denam Pavel, a young man who gets caught between these warring factions and has to make difficult choices during his adventure.

Tactics Ogre: Reborn will have remastered graphics and full voice acting in both English and Japanese. Additionally, it will include an orchestral recording of the original soundtrack, as well as new quality-of-life features such as an adjusted level-management system, reworked AI, and improved UI.

Pre-orders of the $50 standard version come with a digital download code containing a selection of three songs from the new orchestral soundtrack. Those who pre-order the $60 digital premium edition will receive a download code with 10 select chiptune songs from the original 1995 Tactics Ogre game.

This game originally released on the SNES back in 1995 as Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together and received a remake on the PlayStation Portable in 2010. Tactics Ogre: Reborn appears to be based on that PSP game, smoothing out the visuals and adding the aforementioned new features.

With Tactics Ogre: Reborn launching in November, it’s joining a rather backed game release schedule. Square Enix’s own Harvestella starts the month off, and this game will release on the same day as the PC version of Valkryie Elysium. Three juggernauts also releasing that month include Sony’s God of War Ragnarök, Nintendo’s Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, and Ubisoft’s long-awaited Skull and Bones.

Aside from old-school JRPG fans, the mention of Star Ocean might not mean much. The series has always been two or three steps down in popularity from the likes of Final Fantasy or even Dragon Quest, but those who have dug into this slightly more obscure series are quick to sing its praises. First established in 1996, the Star Ocean games have come at an irregular pace, with only five total games in the mainline series released so far, the latest being Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness in 2016. That game, and the previous entry, were not all that well-received, leaving fans unsure about this smaller franchise's future.

Sony's October 2021 State of Play event wasn't full of many big surprises, but the announcement of Star Ocean: The Divine Force was one that meant a lot to fans of the series and also has made fans of JRPGs in general curious about this strange game that mixes fantasy elements into a sci-fi-inspired universe. The trailer we got was only a brief two and a half minutes, but more information has been trickling out. The DioField Chronicle, a new IP developed by Lancarse and published by Square Enix, is the latest in a growing trend of tactical RPG games. While plenty of those kinds of games have come out this year already (including Triangle Strategy, Relayer, and Digimon Survive). The DioField Chronicle intends to put its own spin on the genre and stand out in a crowded field.

To get a sense of how The DioField Chronicle is setting itself apart, I spoke to Lancarse development director and battle designer Fukui Hirofumi, Square Enix producer Shigeyuki Hirata, and art director Kumagai Takahiro. The team members discussed The DioField Chronicle’s gameplay influences, art direction, and how they created a newcomer-friendly strategy game in a daunting genre.

The DioField Chronicle was first revealed during PlayStation’s State of Play presentation in March. When the game’s reveal trailer premiered, viewers thought it could be a new Final Fantasy Tactics game. Then, at the end of the trailer, the game’s title card appeared, showing that it was instead a new IP entirely.

Square Enix holds many of the most famous and storied franchises in gaming history. We all know Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, and even somewhat smaller series like the new Bravely games or the Nier titles. One series that never really got a true chance to shine, and hasn't seen a proper release in over a decade, is the Valkyrie games. The Norse-inspired games began in 2000 with Valkyrie Profile for the original PlayStation, followed by a prequel on the PS2, and then finally one last game on the Nintendo DS in 2009 (not counting a mobile game). They were innovative games that mixed 3D exploration with fluid movements across a map with turn-based battles, but the recently announced Valkyrie Elysium looks to revitalize the series with a new direction.

Fans probably thought Square Enix had long forgotten about this smaller franchise, and yet at the Sony State of Play held in March 2022, Square Enix unveiled Valkyrie Elysium to the world. For most, this would be their first exposure to the long-dormant series, and those that do remember the classic JRPG will be equally curious as to what this new entry will be.
