Ralphie returns home for holiday hijinks in A Christmas Story Christmas trailer

In 1983, the saga of 9-year-old Ralphie Parker and his quest to receive a Red Ryder BB Gun in the 1940s was the subject of the beloved holiday classic, A Christmas Story. Now, a grownup Ralphie is back for more hijinks in the sequel, A Christmas Story Christmas, which released its first trailer and poster.

Reprising his role as Ralphie is Peter Billingsley, who now plays the adult version of the character. Set in the 1970s, Ralphie returns to his childhood home to spend Christmas with his mother, Mrs. Parker (Julie Hagerty), after the death of his father. Without his old man, Ralphie takes it upon himself to give his wife (Erinn Hayes) and two children (River Drosche and Julianna Layne) an outstanding Christmas experience like the special one he had with his family over 30 years before.

Robb as Schwartz, another one of Ralphie’s friends; and Zack Ward as Scut Farkus, Ralphie’s childhood bully that he famously fought.

Kevin and his mom in Home Alone

The holidays can be stressful for all families, sometimes bringing out the worst in us. But in many Christmas movies, the families act like borderline psychopaths and are horrible people. Admittedly, that’s half the reason why we like holiday movies. For some reason during the Christmas season, we let Hollywood get away with presenting some truly demented family dynamics.

So the next time you think there’s nothing worse than dealing with your perpetually grumpy uncle who flew in from Florida, just remember that your family never accidentally forgot you at home while they left for Europe, or fought with an old lady for a canned ham, or kidnapped their boss because they didn’t get a holiday bonus. Here are five seriously awful families in holiday movies (that we still love).

It's the most wonderful time of the year on television. In December, broadcast networks and streaming services will curate lineups with Christmas movies and holiday TV specials. Nearly every night in December will feature a Christmas movie, a holiday-themed TV episode, live music events, or an animated classic.

Several programs on this list are traditions. It's a Wonderful Life, the quintessential holiday movie, always airs on Christmas Eve night on NBC. The Rockefeller Center Christmas tree always lights up on NBC at the beginning of the month. It wouldn't be the holiday season without Home Alone, The Santa Clause, and Frozen, which will all air on NBC.
