The summer of gaming continued with Ubisoft’s dedicated showcase on Monday. Ubisoft Forward broke down the publisher’s upcoming slate across an 80-minute main show and a 15-minute light preshow. There weren’t any surprises, but we got extended looks at some previously announced games. There were gameplay and story reveals for Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, The Crew Motorfest, and Assassin’s Creed Mirage, which had all been teased already. Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown and Star Wars: Outlaws were both announced just days earlier and also got some longer deep dives during the showcase.

When it comes to the Assassin’s Creed franchise, we saw some uncut Mirage gameplay and got a little taste of what’s to come after Mirage with short teasers for Nexus VR and Codename Jade. In case you missed it, this is everything that was announced during the June 2023 Ubisoft Forward.

Funko Fusion is clearly for the Fortnite generation of gamers
Freddy Funko in Funko Fusion.

Some of my fondest gaming memories from growing up are of playing TT Games' Lego video games with my brother. They were easy to pick up and play as a kid, featured some of my favorite franchises like Star Wars and DC Comics, and had a childish sense of humor I found endearing. I eventually grew out of Lego games, and their release cadence dried up due to the tumultuous development of Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga. That's the main reason that Funko Fusion caught my eye; it has the potential to serve the same purpose for this younger generation of players.

I was certainly intrigued by a hands-off preview I saw of Funko Fusion earlier in the year, especially because it highlighted films you wouldn't associate with a game, like The Thing and Sean of the Dead. Having gone hands-on with Funko Fusion's opening and Jurassic World levels, I now know that this game definitely isn't for me, but is tapping into an energy that a lot of younger gamers who mainly play games like Fortnite can appreciate. And if it can serve as a gateway to films like Nope and Hot Fuzz, is that such a bad thing?

Everything announced at THQ Nordic Showcase 2024: Wreckfest 2, Gothic, and more
Two cars crash in Wreckfest 2.

While most major video game showcases tend to happen in June, we just got one more to kick off August. THQ Nordic held its annual digital showcase focusing on a handful of the publisher's upcoming games.

The broadcast takes place ahead of this year's Gamescom, where THQ Nordic will be demoing several of the projects shown during today's showcase. While the show wasn't jam-packed with announcements, it did provide a deep dive into five games, including the newly announced Wreckfest 2 and the upcoming Gothic remake. Ahead of the show, Digital Trends attended a pre-briefing event and learned more details on each title. Here's everything that was revealed at THQ Nordic's 2024 Showcase.

Star Wars Outlaws feels like Ubisoft’s own Red Dead Redemption
Kay tries to enter Crimson Dawn territory.

There was plenty to see and do during the four hours I spent with Star Wars Outlaws at a recent preview event. The universe was at my fingertips, but my adventure was at its best when I could simply vibe. My most memorable moment came when walking into a dingy bar on Kijimi from The Rise of Skywalker and playing several rounds of Sabacc, only to walk back to my ship and find some loot to smuggle. It's such moments that sell the smuggler fantasy that Ubisoft is touting as the first open-world Star Wars video game.

Behind all of this, players have to balance their relationships with the five different Syndicates that rule the underworld of the Star Wars galaxy. While I still have questions about how this system will play out in the long term, as well as plenty of nitpicks, the relationship management adds to the sandbox feel of Ubisoft's sci-fi adventure. At its highest points, it feels like Ubisoft's Massive Entertainment is using Star Wars Outlaws to deliver a sci-fi answer to Red Dead Redemption.
Attention to detail
My lengthy Star Wars Outlaws preview began on Toshara, a new planet created by Ubisoft that was the first section of the game that opened up to players. It's here where I met the Pyke, Crimson Dawn, and Hutt syndicates and began forming relationships with each as Kay Vess. For the most part, doing so came through missions that had me exploring Toshara's open world on a speeder bike.
