This new gaming laptop might have water cooling and an RTX 4090

We haven’t seen any promising gaming laptops with liquid cooling, but Lenovo might make that happen very soon. According to a report, the company has plans to launch the Legion 9i, its newest flagship gaming notebook that will feature a water-cooling solution.

The upcoming laptop is expected to feature the 13th generation Intel Core i9-13980HX, the highest-rated mobile processor offered by team blue. It is expected to be paired with the top-of-the-line Nvidia RTX 4090 mobile with 16GB of GDDR6 VRAM. This, in itself, makes it the most powerful gaming notebook on the market. However, Lenovo is taking things to the next level by incorporating a unique water-cooling solution that will additionally help in maintaining a slim profile of just 18.9mm. Thus, not only will it feature the most high-end processing chips, but it will also be the slimmest one in its category.

At an official unveiling, a Lenovo spokesperson presented a slide illustrating that the cooling system engages exclusively when the system’s temperature hits 84°C. This clever design removes the necessity for a liquid pump to operate during periods of laptop inactivity or when not employed for gaming.

We don’t have detailed information on how exactly the water-cooled solution will work, but it is said to be aided by three internal cooling fans. Despite having a complex cooling solution, the laptop is expected to come with the option of installing two M.2 2280 SSDs, two DDR5 memory modules, and include a massive 4-cell 99.9 WHr battery.

Other features that you can expect on the laptop include a 16.3-inch 2K IPS screen with a variable refresh rate capable of reaching up to 165Hz, according to the report. There are also rumors of a mini-LED display option that could launch at an inflated price point.

As of now, information regarding the price and availability of Lenovo’s Legion 9i laptop remains undisclosed. However, there’s a possibility that the laptop might be introduced during the IFA 2023 in Berlin, scheduled from September 1 to 5. It’s worth noting that the company might also take the opportunity to unveil the speculated Legion Go handheld gaming console during the same event.

I've never used a laptop quite like the Lenovo Legion 9i. It's the only laptop I've given a perfect score, which you can read about in my Lenovo Legion 9i review, and it puts many of the best gaming laptops to shame. It's out of reach for most people -- it's certainly too expensive for me -- but I didn't touch another laptop this year that excited me as much as the Legion 9i did.

Sure, it's a powerful laptop, but when you're spending $3,000 (or more) on a gaming laptop, you expect peak performance. The Legion 9i stands out so much because it refines this class of laptop. It takes all of the elements that make 16-inch desktop replacements impractical and turns them on their head. It's not a flawless laptop -- no laptop ever is -- but it's the closest I've seen this year.

Apple's M3 Max is an incredibly powerful chip, significantly increasing Apple Silicon's CPU and GPU performance. It's gotten a ton of press, but is it necessarily faster than the fastest Windows laptops?

To find out, we pitted it against the Lenovo Legion 9i, a gaming laptop equipped with the ultrafast Intel Core i9-13980HX and Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090, and the Asus ROG Strix Scar 17 with the AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX and the RTX 4090. We can't compare the MacBook Pro 14 with the M3 Max directly to the Lenovo and Asus in that many benchmarks, particularly gaming, due to limits in testing and cross-platform compatibility. But we could compare enough to get an idea of how these various chips stack up against each other.
A brief look at architectures
The Apple M3 Max is an ARM-based system on a chip (SoC) currently at the high end of Apple Silicon's lineup. It represents the first chips made using a 3nm process and redesigned GPU architecture. On the CPU side, Apple increased the speed of its performance cores by 15% and its efficiency cores by 30% over the M2. Overall, Apple is promising a 20% to 25% improvement in performance. On the GPU side, Dynamic Caching is one technology that speeds up a variety of GPU processes, while gamers will benefit from mesh shading and hardware-accelerated ray tracing.
