Sony has announced that it will be holding another State of Play presentation on September 14, just hours after Nintendo holds its third Direct of the year. Sony has confirmed that it will stream the September 2023 State of Play across its official YouTube, Twitch, and TikTok channels. The YouTube premier is already set up, and we’ve embedded it above so you can watch the State of Play right from this page.

What to expect from the September 2023 State of Play

In terms of what to expect from the show, Sony gave the following description: “This State of Play broadcast will focus on updates to previously announced games coming to PlayStation consoles. From indie and [PlayStation VR2] highlights  to major upcoming titles from our third-party partners, our latest show has something for everyone.”

That’s pretty vague, but notable upcoming third-party PS5 and PSVR2 games include Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Journey to Foundation, Alan Wake 2, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, the Star Wars: Knight of the Old Republic remake, Helldivers 2, Little Devil Inside, and Tekken 8. If we’re lucky, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 will rear its head here one final time before launch too; that’s just speculation, though.

The Stellar Blade and Nier: Automata crossover DLC is on the way, with special items set to be available when the former game updates on November 20.

An announcement on the PlayStation Blog reveals that a shop run by Emil, the stone-faced, dead-eyed merchant that you may recognize as the mask Nier: Automata creator Yoko Taro wears out in public, will be available in Stellar Blade. Players can then gain access to 11 new items. While the post doesn't specify what they are, you can expect some familiar outfits.

The PS5 Pro holds the key to the PS6’s success
The hero of Shadow of the Colossus stands in a temple.

When the PlayStation 5 Pro was revealed, the big buzzword to come out of the presentation was PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR). This was PlayStation's "secret sauce" intended to sell the $700 upgrade to new customers and existing PS5 owners alike. Similar to AI upscaling seen in technology like DLSS, PSSR allows games rendered at a lower resolution to be upscaled using AI to appear more detailed. For the PS5 Pro, this means removing the need to choose between a performance mode that prioritizes frame rate and a resolution mode that sacrifices frame rate for a clearer picture.

PSSR is the first time any kind of AI upscaling has been used on consoles ... and will be key in PlayStation's success for its true next-generation console.
Sidestepping the graphical arms race
With rare exceptions, new game consoles have mainly sold themselves based on providing a graphical leap above its predecessor. This was clear as day going from 8- to 16-bit systems, and perhaps at its peak going from 16-bit to 3D, but has since hit a level of diminishing returns. PS5 games are undeniably better looking than PS4 games of the same scale, but the differences are in the margins.
