LG’s flagship phone, the Optimus 4X HD, is beginning its launch across Europe, finally putting LG in competition with the likes of the Samsung Galaxy S3 and HTC One X. Like those phones, the 4X HD has a quad-core processor (again, in Europe) and runs Android 4.0, the latest and greatest OS from Google.

Though LG says that the Optimus 4X HD is “available for purchase in Europe,” from the fine print, it looks like only those in Germany can pick up the phone today. It will supposedly launch in the Netherlands, Sweden, the UK, and Italy in the next week or so, and the rest of Europe should get it in the “weeks and months ahead.” LG also plans to release the phone in Asia, Russia (and neighboring countries), South America, and Central America in the next few months as well, though no firm countries or release dates have been given. The US has also been completely left out. We imagine that LG will rebrand the phone, as it has previous Optimus phones, to please one of the major carriers here in the United States. That is, of course, if the phone makes it to US shores at all.

LG has packed in all the features you’d expect of a 2012 high-end Android phone. It runs on Nvidia’s fancy Tegra 3 processor and has a big 4.7-inch screen with a 720p resolution. And like its competitors, though LG has loaded the phone with Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich), it has significantly altered the user interface, calling its new creation the Optimus UI 3.0, which has changed a bit since we tried out the Optimus 4X HD at Mobile World Congress in February. The new UI has features like “Time Catch Shot,” which takes pictures before you press the shutter button at all and lets you choose between them after you snap a photo. LG is also bragging that its 2150mAh battery is ever-so-slightly larger than the competition, though a bigger battery doesn’t always mean longer battery life.

Exact pricing and carrier availability will likely vary by country and region, but expect to pay up if you want an Optimus 4X HD anytime soon.

Motorola just announced a new Moto G phone with a surprising spec
Motorola's new Moto G Power 2025 in Slate and Leaf Green.

It’s a new year, and Motorola is kicking it off with two new Moto G phones. Both the new Moto G Power 2025 and Moto G 2025 are budget-friendly phones that look solid on paper, but the Moto G Power stands out with a unique feature.

The Moto G Power offers some premium specs at a not-so-premium price. With the Moto G Power, you get a large 6.8-inch display, a 120Hz refresh rate, and maximum 1,000 nits of brightness. The display has Corning Gorilla Glass 5 for durability. It's pretty standard stuff, but it's also nice to have it on a device that only costs $300. It even has a sleek vegan leather finish.

How OnePlus made the OnePlus 13 one of the year’s most interesting smartphones
Rear shell of the OnePlus 13 against a yellow background.

Last week, OnePlus unveiled its latest flagship phone. There’s a lot to get excited about this time around. The OnePlus 13 is not your usual year-over-year upgrade that is merely doing its refresh due diligence. It’s the biggest signal for the shift across the entire smartphone segment this year.

Once again, the design is familiar, but there are enough changes to distinguish the OnePlus 13 from any other phone that the company has made so far. I was lucky to get my hands on the blue trim, which is likely going to drive the most demand.
