Max celebrates Women’s History Month with tons of movies, TV shows, and original programming

It’s never too late to celebrate Women’s History Month. The month-long celebration happens every March, and this year, Max has decided to honor women everywhere with a programming schedule designed to highlight movies, TV shows, and documentaries that place women in front of and behind the camera, as well as subjects and themes that showcase the female experience.

Across its multiple brands and franchises, Max has refreshed its “In Her Voice” collection and broken the considerable library down into such categories as “Strong Leading Ladies,” “Comedy Showcase,” “Iconic Ensembles,” and more. Some highlights include recent TV shows such as True Detective: Night Country starring Jodie Foster and Kali Reis and The Regime with Kate Winslet, as well as past seasons of such popular series as And Just Like That…, Magnolia Table with Joanna Gaines, Insecure, Selena + Chef, Hacks, Abbott Elementary, and The Sex Lives of College Girls.

Max has movies too, with plenty of women-centric stories driving such recent hits as Barbie and The Color Purple, as well as modern classics like The Devil Wears Prada, Legally Blonde, and A Star is Born. Documentaries are also available to watch, with Tina (about the iconic singer and actress Tina Turner), Being Mary Tyler Moore, and We Will Rise: Michelle Obama’s Mission to Educate being notable standouts in a stellar lineup of nonfiction hits.

The 10 most popular shows on (HBO) Max right now

The more things change, the more the most popular shows on (HBO) Max tend to stay the same. Dune: Prophecy retains its grip on the No. 1 slot, as there aren't any other HBO original dramas to challenge it. The returning Max original series The Sex Lives of College Girls and the new DC animated show Creature Commandos have found their way on the list this month as well.

By now, it shouldn't be shocking when reality shows from the Discovery networks land on this list as well. But it is surprising to see Sister Wives at No. 2 on the list, followed by 90 Day Fiancé: Before the 90 Days. Like them or not, those shows have an audience.

Spooky season is right around the corner, and the folks at HBO and Max intend to throw a monster mash that will impress the most jaded of every ghoul and goblin out there. But the streamer has more than just tricks and treats to dish out in October.

In addition to finally premiering the long-delayed Stephen King adaption Salem's Lot, the streamer will debut the original series The Franchise, which takes a comedic look into the making of a big-budget superhero movie. Other notable additions to the programming slate include the A24 drama Tuesday with Julia Louis-Dreyfus and the streaming debut of MaXXXine, the final chapter in the X trilogy.

One of the year’s best can’t-miss films is finally streaming on Max

2024 hasn't been a particularly memorable year for movies. Only a few truly great films have hit theaters over the past nine months, and a number of those movies, like Furiosa, haven't had the kind of impact among general viewers that many of their supporters hoped they would. Generally speaking, it's been an unremarkable year for moviegoers with only a handful of films emerging as the kind of rare, distinct spectacles that demand to be seen.

One of those movies, Alex Garland's Civil War, electrified and polarized critics when it was released in April. The film, a dystopian thriller set in a near-future America that has been divided into two warring factions, surprised and disappointed certain viewers with its unexpectedly apolitical approach to its deliberately button-pushing story. Without the baggage of any specific political points of view present to weigh it down, though, Civil War gets to stand on its own terms as an unflinching, utterly gripping war epic.
