It’s almost time to return to the Wasteland in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. On X (formerly Twitter), Odeon released nearly six minutes of new footage from Furiosa, which previews a vengeful Anya Taylor-Joy in the titular role.

In the first section of the footage, “Her Odyssey Begins,” a young Furiosa (Alyla Browne) is traveling the Wasteland with her mother (Charlee Fraser). Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is produced and directed by George Miller on a script he co-wrote with Nico Lathouris. Furiosa is a spinoff and prequel to Mad Max: Fury Road. Set 15 to 20 years before Fury Road, Taylor-Joy steps into the role of Furiosa, originally played by Charlize Theron. Furiosa’s ensemble also features Lachy Hulme, Nathan Jones, Angus Sampson, John Howard, Josh Helman, Quaden Bayles, and Daniel Webber.

On May 15, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga had its world premiere at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival. After its premiere, Furiosa received a seven-minute standing ovation from the crowd.

Furiosa: Why the Mad Max prequel is the most anticipated 2024 action movie
A woman hides in shadow in Furiosa.

The post-apocalyptic Mad Max franchise was put on ice just as the acclaimed Fury Road reboot was fleshing out its world, but Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is finally set to release this year. Director George Miller's prequel (Lorenzo's Oil, Happy Feet), expands on the backstory of Imperator Furiosa, a character originally played by Charlize Theron in the 2015 reboot.

Before crossing paths with Tom Hardy's Mad Max, Anya Taylor-Joy will play a younger Furiosa as she's kidnapped from her home in the Green Place and thrust into a war between two Tyrants. While it still seems like it will be some time before a sequel to Fury Road finally premieres, this prequel seems like an exciting reason to delve back into this sci-fi dystopia. Between the star power of Taylor-Joy and Miller returning to the director's chair, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga has all the potential to be 2024's most promising action movie and one of the most anticipated movies of 2024.

Anya Taylor-Joy as Furiosa in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.

It's not uncommon for directors to lose a step late in their careers. But George Miller seems to be a rare exception. Miller's first feature-length film was actually the first Mad Max in 1979, and he revitalized his career in 2015 with the widely acclaimed sequel, Mad Max: Fury Road. Now, Fury Road is finally getting its prequel spinoff, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. And if the first trailer is any indication, Miller's still got his signature touch at 78 years old.

George Lucas abandoned a Star Wars twist that would have changed Obi-Wan’s story
Liam Neeson and Ewan McGregor stand back to back in Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace.

Few Star Wars characters have a story as well-known or important as Obi-Wan Kenobi. The character, first introduced as an older Jedi in 1977's Star Wars: Episode IV — A New Hope, is both a noteworthy mentor to Luke and Anakin Skywalker and a tragic figure due to the dissolution of his friendship with the latter. Thanks to Ewan McGregor and Alec Guinness' dual, decades-spanning performances as the character, Obi-Wan's story has been brought to life in almost its entirety over the years, too.

However, it turns out that Star Wars creator George Lucas originally had a very different idea for Obi-Wan Kenobi's story. In an interview with StarWars.com, Iain McCaig, who worked as a behind-the-scenes artist on Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace, revealed that Lucas originally intended to swap the names of Ewan McGregor's Obi-Wan Kenobi and Liam Neeson's Qui-Gon Jinn in that film. "It’s interesting how things evolve,” McCaig commented. “For a time, the older Jedi was named Obi-Wan and the younger Jedi was named Qui-Gon."
