MultiVersus adds Jason Voorhees and Agent Smith to its wacky roster

MultiVersus - Official Launch Trailer "Stars Collide. Pies Fly."

Warner Bros. Games is continuing to build out its MultiVersus fighting game roster before it launches its 1.0 version on May 28. On Monday, the company introduced Friday the 13th killer Jason Voorhees and The Matrix villain Agent Smith to the lineup.

The pair was announced in a new trailer called “Stars Collide. Pies Fly,” which depicted many of the playable MultiVersus characters battling it out for various reasons. Finn from Adventure Time faces off against Bugs Bunny, Velma comes in for the assist, and the Iron Giant fights Stripe from Gremlins.

The trailer also gives a spotlight to the Joker, who was also recently announced as part of the game’s 1.0 launch. He’s the one that summons Jason and Agent. Smith to the game —  according to the trailer, anyway. All three will launch as part of Season 1, called “Puns & Villainy.” However, while Jason will be available at launch, Agent Smith will arrive at a later date.

Warner Bros. Games has been doing a big marketing push for MultiVersus, its free-to-play fighting game. A beta version launched in July 2022, along with paid Founder’s Packs that gave players extra in-game currency, battle pass tokens, and more. After some balance changes and two seasons, the game went offline in June 2023.

Since being taken offline, the developers at Player First Games have made some big changes, including rebuilding the game from the ground up to support improved netcode for online play and to exist in Unreal Engine 5 for improved visuals. They’ve also added new stages and characters. Beyond the aforementioned ones, they also added Marvin the Martian. The characters beta players know are still in the game, although they’ll feature new movesets. Finally, players will get a new PvE mode called Rifts, which will feature fights based around certain themes and narratives.

Black Adam comes to MultiVersus alongside arcade mode
A pixelated version of Black Adam flashes on the screen of a MultiVersus arcade machine.

After two months of waiting, DC's Black Adam will finally join the battle on MultiVersus later this week. And in a shock to fans (literally and figuratively) he's also bringing Arcade Mode to the game with him.

Warner Bros. Games and Player First Games released a teaser trailer on Twitter last night of a 1980s-style TV commercial showing a MultiVersus arcade machine and Black Adam showing up on the screen in pixel form to the sound of thunder before the lightning causes a blackout. As shown in the banner for Season 1, the Black Adam that will come to the game is based on the comic books, not the DCEU version played by Dwayne Johnson in the latest film, Black Adam.

MultiVersus Halloween event guide and rewards
Batman holding Shaggy.

It seems that every game with an online element, especially those that are free-to-play, is getting in on the Halloween spirit. Whether they're shooters, RPGs, or, in this case, fighters, there is always a fun way to bring in the spooky season with a new mode, event, and special rewards. For MultiVersus, this holiday will be a major one, as not only will the new character Stripe be introduced with the patch, but there will also be an entire host of Halloween content.

Unlike some other larger-scale games, MultiVersus can't exactly create brand-new dedicated game types just for Halloween, as much as we'd be excited if they did. However, that hasn't stopped the team from adding some sweet incentives for playing and a new little layer to the game that will let you get your hands on some brand-new rewards that you can't get any other way. Here's a full guide on the Halloween event in MultiVersus and what rewards you can snag.

Every character in MultiVersus
A large group of DC and Warner Bros characters stand together in MultiVersus.

Just like the excitement riled up with each new cast member announcement for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, MultiVersus has already built up plenty of hype with just how unpredictable its roster of characters is. Even the cast that launched with the game included some off-the-wall choices like Arya Stark and The Iron Giant, but WB and Player First Games have committed to not only supporting the game with new updates and balance patches but even more wild characters.

With a roster as diverse as this, and the pace at which new ones are added and announced, it may be difficult to keep up with all the familiar faces packed into this platform fighter. Because it's free to play, it is especially important to know what characters are in the game, as well as who is coming up, so you can save up your gold to pick them up as soon as you can. To help keep it all straight, here's a full list of all the current and confirmed characters in MultiVersus.
