The ad-free options for Max are getting more expensive

The Max app on Apple TV.

You knew this was going to happen, right? Max — the streaming service that houses the combined works of Warner Bros. and Discovery, including HBO and the TNT family — is increasing its prices again. (It last did so in early 2023, when it was still just HBO Max.)

Here’s the deal:

  • The ad-free option is going up $1 a month to $17. If you opt to pay annually, you’ll have to fork over $20 more than before, taking things up to $170 a year.
  • Or if you want the “Ultimate ad-free” option — which lets you stream on up to four devices at once and includes 4K resolution, Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision, and HDR 10 on select titles — you’ll  pay $21 a month (that’s up $1), or $210 a year (up $10).

The Max plan that includes advertising remains at $10 a month, or $100 a year.

The new pricing goes into effect immediately for new subscriptions. Renewing subscriptions will get a 30-day heads up before the new pricing takes effect.

In its email announcing the price changes, Max didn’t offer a reason for the increase.

Spotify adds a paid audiobook option to its free tier
Audiobooks on Spotify on an iPhone.

Spotify today announced an option that brings audiobooks to the free tier -- for a price. Dubbed the Audiobooks Access tier, it'll get you 15 hours of listening from more than 200,000 books for $10 a month, without having to also pay for Spotify Premium.

And, well, that's it. Spotify says that since it started offering audiobooks as part of the Premium subscription, it's seen a 45% increase in free users both searching for and interacting with audiobook content on a daily basis.

Samsung adding Auracast and 360 Audio to more TVs, phones, and earbuds
Samsung Galaxy Buds 2 Pro.

Samsung today announced a series of updates for some televisions and a trio of earbuds that will add features across the board, and also allow everything to play together that much more.

Auracast is one of the more interesting features on the way. It essentially allows one device to pick up a signal being broadcast by another, not unlike a radio. Samsung has had Auracast on select TVs for a while now, and it's been available on multiple Galaxy Buds earbuds. Now, it's expanding to phones and tablets. The ability to broadcast will hit the Galaxy S24 and S23 phones, the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Z Flip 5, and the Tab S9 series. (They'll all need to have One UI 6.1 or newer.) And the ability to listen to an Auracast broadcast is coming to the Galaxy S24 series, S23 series, Z Fold5, Z Fold4, Z Flip5, Z Flip4, A54 5G, M54 5G, Tab S9 series, Tab S9 FE series and Tab Active 5 5G with One UI 5.1.1 or above.
