What You Need

  • A computer with an internet connection

  • Your existing ChatGPT login and password

We'll walk you through the process of updating your ChatGPT password quickly and securely, covering everything you need to know to keep your AI adventures safe.

How to reset your ChatGPT Password

The ChatGPT website's security feature operates a little differently from what you may be used to. For example, if you click on the user icon in the upper-right corner of the ChatGPT home screen and select Settings, then Security, you won't find an option to actively reset your password.

You will, however, find an option to enable two-factor authentication, which you should absolutely go back and do as soon as you finish resetting your password. But first, let's get you logged out.

Step 1: to log yourself out of ChatGPT, click on the user icon in the upper-right corner of the screen and select Log Out. The system may pop up a screen asking if you want to log back in or stay logged out. If it does, choose the latter option.

Step 2: Now, log yourself back in. Once you've successfully logged yourself out of the system, the ChatGPT page will display a pair of radio buttons in the lower-left corner of the screen, one to Log In, the other to Sign Up. Choose the former option.

Step 3: Manually enter your email address and select Forgot Password. The login screen will give you the option to either manually enter a password or select a radio button to Continue With your existing Google, Microsoft, or Apple accounts and gain access through those. Even if you have already linked one of those accounts and are using your Gmail, Microsoft, or Apple email address to log in, type it into the field and select Continue, then select the Forgot Password link.

Step 4: Enter your email address to send yourself a password reset link. At the *Reset your password**screen, just type your email address into the field and hit *Continue*. The system will send a password reset link to that account (be sure to check your spam folder if it doesn't show up within a few minutes).

Step 5: Select the link in that email to go to a new Reset Your Password page, where you will enter and reenter your new password. Just make sure it's at least 12 characters long or, even better, pick yourself up a password manager like LastPass or OnePass and have it generate secure passwords on your behalf.

Step 6: Log back in using your new credentials. Once you've updated your password, follow the link back to the ChatGPT home page and select Log In, either from the popup menu or by using the link in the lower left like you did in Step 2. That's it. That's all you have to do. Happy chatting.

Can I change my ChatGPT account's email address the same way?

While you can easily change your account password, the same cannot be said for the email address associated with it. Per OpenAI's help page, "We do not support updating the email address associated with your ChatGPT/OpenAI account."

In short, if you want your ChatGPT account to use a different email than the one you're already using, you're going to need to sign up for a new ChatGPT account. What's more, the company does not offer any way to transfer your existing chat data to that new account, so any conversations you've had to date will be left behind.

ChatGPT Advanced Voice mode: release date, compatibility, and more
Nothing Phone 2a and ChatGPT voice mode.

Advanced Voice Mode is a new feature for ChatGPT that enables users to hold real-time, humanlike conversations with the AI chatbot without the need for a text-based prompt window or back-and-forth audio. It was released in late July to select Plus subscribers after being first demoed at OpenAI's Spring Update event.

According to the company, the feature “offers more natural, real-time conversations, allows you to interrupt at any time, and senses and responds to your emotions.” It can even take breath breaks and simulate human laughter during conversation. The best part is that access is coming soon, if you don't have it already.

An accurate ChatGPT watermarking tool may exist, but OpenAI won’t release it
chatGPT on a phone on an encyclopedia

ChatGPT plagiarists beware, as OpenAI has developed a tool that is capable of detecting GPT-4's writing output with reportedly 99.99% accuracy. However, the company has spent more than a year waffling over whether or not to actually release it to the public.

The company is reportedly taking a “deliberate approach” due to “the complexities involved and its likely impact on the broader ecosystem beyond OpenAI,” per TechCrunch. "The text watermarking method we’re developing is technically promising, but has important risks we’re weighing while we research alternatives, including susceptibility to circumvention by bad actors and the potential to disproportionately impact groups like non-English speakers,” an OpenAI spokesperson said.

What is ChatGPT?
ChatGPT is a natural language AI chatbot. At its most basic level, that means you can ask it a question and it will generate an answer. As opposed to a simple voice assistant like Siri or Google Assistant, ChatGPT is built on what is called an LLM (Large Language Model). These neural networks are trained on huge quantities of information from the internet for deep learning -- meaning they generate altogether new responses, rather than just regurgitating canned answers. They're not built for a specific purpose like chatbots of the past -- and they're a whole lot smarter.
