All Assassin’s Creed games in order, by release date and chronologically

After a humble beginning in 2007, Assassin’s Creed has become not only one of Ubisoft’s most successful franchises but one of the biggest in gaming as a whole. Originally meant to be a new Prince of Persia game, the series was instead allowed to be a new IP that focused on a secret order of assassins in a centuries-long conflict with the Knights Templar.

What made the series so appealing was the setup. Through the use of a fictional machine called the Animus, people could relive the memories of their ancestors to learn secrets from the past to help in the present. That opened up endless possibilities for places and time periods the series could go. With over a dozen games in the series and counting, we’ve been all across history at this point.

Even if you’re a huge history buff, keeping track of the timeline of Assassin’s Creed is no easy feat. You can’t even rely on the numbers in the title guiding you along the way, either. Whether you want to play the game from the earliest point in history to the most recent, or simply go in release order, we’ve laid out the timeline for you.

The first Assassin’s Creed came out in 2007, with the sequel coming in 2009. Since that point we had yearly releases up until 2015 (and sometimes multiple in a year) where we had our next two-year gap in mainline titles. Now, the series is straddling the line between the classic formula and more recent RPG-heavy systems to mixed results.

This is a full list of Assassin’s Creed games currently released, year by year.

All Assassin’s Creed games in chronological order

Playing the Assassin’s Creed series in chronological order started getting very complicated after the first few entries. Each game jumps decades or centuries forward and backward from one another in the timeline, making it quite challenging to know which games go where in the grand scheme of things. We’re talking about a timeline that spans the early 400s B.C. up to the early 1900s across nearly every continent. Some games even have some overlap to make it even more complex.

If you’re eager to sharpen your hidden blade and stealth-kill your way through this series from its earliest point to the latest in the timeline, we’ll mark your targets for you. Note that we will ignore the smaller mobile releases here that are included in the complete list above.

  • Assassin’s Creed Odyssey (431 B.C-422 B.C.)
  • Assassin’s Creed Origins (49 B.C.-44 B.C.)
  • Assassin’s Creed Mirage (861)
  • Assassin’s Creed Valhalla (872-878)
  • Assassin’s Creed (1191)
  • Assassin’s Creed II (1476-1499)
  • Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood (1499-1507)
  • Assassin’s Creed: Revelations (1511-1512)
  • Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: China (1526-1532)
  • Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag (1715-1722)
  • Assassin’s Creed Rogue (1752-1760)
  • Assassin’s Creed III (1754-1783)
  • Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation (1765-1777)
  • Assassins Creed Unity (1789-1794)
  • Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: India (1841)
  • Assassin’s Creed Syndicate (1868)
  • Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: Russia (1917-1918)
