New Xbox Game Pass additions are looking quite wholesome

Xbox Game Pass looks a bit quiet for the rest of July, but looks can be deceiving. Three indies, a long-awaited action RPG, and a gorgeous genre mash-up are just some of the games that’ll soon be available. However, Xbox is only announcing additions up to July 19.

There are some comforting games at the top of the list. First, we have Flock, an indie title that combines the joys of birdwatching and the fun of flying on the back of a giant bird (we assume it’s fun). Either way, section editor Giovanni Colantonio called it a “pleasant expedition to a colorful world that might help you better appreciate your own,” and it’s out now.

Game Pass is also getting Magical Delicacy, which is also out now. This is a platformer where you cook, um, magical delicacies and deliver them to your neighbors while also discovering more about the world.  We haven’t published our final thoughts on Dungeons of Hinterberg, out July 18, just yet, but the premise is appealing. You go on vacation to Hinterberg in the Alps, take on dungeons, and just live your life in a new town.

We’re also set to get Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn on July 18, which was announced in 2022 and is set to take on other action RPGs like Elden Ring with a unique touch that balances traditional weapons and magic.

Finally, there’s Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess on July 19. This visually stunning real-time strategy/tower defense/action game was one of the best games we played at Summer Game Fest, so we’re excited to check out the full release.

Oddly, there don’t appear to be any additions after July 19. The beginning of the post does have a hint for what’s to come: Let’s stay in touch, we have another update for you soon.” It’s likely Xbox has a much larger game hitting the subscription service at the end of the month and will have a dedicated announcement for it.

If you were hoping Grand Theft Auto 6 would launch day one on Xbox Game Pass, you're out of luck. Take-Two Interactive execs have been hesitant to launch the company's games on subscription services on Xbox Game Pass, and that will continue to be the case, according to the CEO's recent comments.

In an interview with Gamesindustry.biz ahead of the company's latest financial report, CEO Strauss Zelnick candidly said that while he believes the addition of the Call of Duty franchise will push players to the service for a bit, it won't affect Take-Two's release strategy.

Xbox Game Pass’ new creature-collecting game is a cozy Palworld alternative

While a lot of the hubbub around day-one Xbox Game Pass games centers around first-party titles (or lack thereof), Microsoft’s subscription service has been surprisingly consistent when it comes to snagging quality indie and AA games for the service the day they release. These are often some of the best, most creative games on the entire service, whether that’s because they experiment with gameplay mechanics or just tell a really good story.

This year alone, games like Another Crab’s Treasure, Dungeons of Hinterberg, and Palworld all were on Xbox Game Pass the day they were released and offered up some of the year’s most memorable experiences. Creatures of Ava from Inverge Studios and 11 bit Studios is the latest enjoyable third-party game that you can add to that lineup, as it uniquely blends several elements from different games to create a special, nonviolent sci-fi adventure.

A beloved Xbox Game Pass indie is getting an ambitious sequel

Descenders, an indie sports game from RageSquid and No More Robots, is quietly one of the best games on Xbox Game Pass thanks to its engaging bike-riding gameplay and endlessly playable, procedurally generated levels. Now, it's getting a sequel called Descenders Next that trades in biking for snowboarding and mountainboarding.

In Descenders Next, players can choose from a variety of handcrafted parks or procedurally generated level "nodes" across several different biomes. Players are then free to snowboard or mountainboard down the mountain, performing tricks and building up their reputation along the way.
