Could a marvelous reunion between the Russo Brothers and Disney be in the works? As Matthew McConaughey once said in a Lincoln commercial, “Sometimes you’ve got to go back to actually move forward.”

Per The Hollywood Reporter, Anthony and Joe Russo are in early discussions to direct Avengers 5 and 6.

The Russo Brothers are the most prolific filmmakers in Marvel history. The duo directed Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil WarAvengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame. The Russos’ two Avengers films are two of the six highest-grossing films of all time.

Since leaving Marvel after Endgame, the Russo Brothers have produced several hit movies, including two Extraction films and Everything Everywhere All at Once, with the latter winning Best Picture. The duo also produced Prime Video’s Citadel, which was renewed for a second season. However, their directorial efforts, notably Cherry and The Gray Man, were critically panned. The Russos’ next film, The Electric State, will stream on Netflix in late 2024 or 2025.

Over the past few months, Marvel Studios has been searching for filmmakers to helm Avengers 5 and 6, two movies considered a high priority for the studio. Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy was rumored to be the top choice to direct Avengers 5. THR reports that Marvel offer Levy Avengers 5. However, Levy will likely work on his Star Wars film after finishing his work on Deadpool & Wolverine and Stranger Things season 5.

Avengers 5 was originally titled Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, with Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings director Destin Daniel Cretton attached to direct. However, Cretton exited the project in November 2023, and Marvel fired Jonathan Majors, who plays Kang, the following month after sexual assault allegations.

Avengers 5 will receive a new title and focus. Meanwhile, Avengers 6 remains Avengers: Secret Wars. The film could see the return of over 60 MCU characters, including legacy roles like Thor and the Hulk.

Avengers 5 is scheduled for May 1, 2026, with Avengers 6 coming out on May 7, 2027.

If you have to watch one (HBO) Max movie in September 2024, stream this one
Jessica Chastain in The Martian.

If you're looking to have a Harry Potter marathon on Max, now would be the time. All eight of the Harry Potter movies are back on Max in September, and they're joined by horror classics The Exorcist and The Shining. Some of our other favorites this month include The Big Chill, Inherent Vice, and Disobedience. Any of those films would be good choices to stream, but our pick for the one Max movie that you have to watch in September is The Martian.

Don't let the name fool you, this isn't that kind of science fiction movie. There aren't any little gray aliens living on Mars; there's just a single human astronaut who may be hopelessly stranded and doomed to die long before any rescue operation can be launched. But it's far from a hopeless story, and even the behind-the-scenes tale of The Martian is inspiring. Novelist Andy Weir self-published the book on his own website before it was discovered by a larger audience. The Martian became a bestselling novel, which in turn led director Ridley Scott to assemble a stellar cast to bring it to life on the big screen.

Amy Adams in Nocturnal Animals.

Amazon Prime Video has a wide range of films for movie lovers of all ages, and that's very apparent in the second week of September. This week's new addition is Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, one of DreamWorks Animation's best animated movies in the past decade. It is primarily a family movie, but it's also one of the rare films to appeal to kids of all ages.

Our other Prime Video spotlight film of the week is Nocturnal Animals, a 2016 thriller starring Amy Adams and Jake Gyllenhaal that blends two disparate narratives into one engrossing movie. It's a worthy addition to Prime Video, but suitable only for mature audiences. You can find more of the best movies on Amazon Prime Video below. Check back every Friday morning as we keep this list up-to-date with the latest films.

The 50 best movies on Netflix right now (September 2024)
The cast of Uglies.

Time and time again, low-budget action films from other studios have risen to the top of the most popular movies on Netflix. But now, Netflix has a low-budget success story of its own with Rebel Ridge, which feels like the streamer's answer to Jack Reacher. Rebel Ridge has been dominating the movie rankings on Netflix since its release last week, but it's got competition this week with Netflix's new sci-fi YA adaptation Uglies. Both films come at a moment when the box office doesn't offer anything fresh to enjoy until next week. So that makes the idea of staying at home this weekend to watch movies a lot more appealing.

Keep reading for more of the best movies on Netflix right now. We update this list every Friday so you'll always have fresh options when planning your weekend movie nights.
